What is the Difference Between Remodeling and Renovating a House?

February 11, 2022 by Pam Maynard

When you are getting ready to do some work on your house, you will likely start reading about all the possibilities and looking at websites with ideas for bathrooms, kitchens, new tiles, and more. You may also have encountered the words remodeling and renovation and wondered, what is the difference? Let’s find out.

Home Care Contractors suggests that understanding what you are hoping to change, being sure about the features of a room that you like or dislike, and your budget will help you make the right decision.

Some Important Differences

The main difference between renovation and remodeling is the fact that while renovation refers to the process of restoring something to its previous or original state, remodeling involves creating something completely new.

Renovation deals with restoring something to working condition or invigorating an existing space. Remodeling is remaking or altering the structure of a space to create something different.

Should you remodel or renovate?

There are cases where it may not be necessary to decide between one or the other. You can decide to keep all bedrooms as they are and just repaint them and change the flooring while the house’s living room gets a complete remodeling. Sometimes, you may be on the fence between a renovation and a remodel.

Planning a Residential Renovation

When you plan a renovation for your home or some of its rooms, you are renewing or reviving them. To achieve this, you could have the area repainted, the cabinets refinished or refaced, and the light fixtures swapped out for some that better fit the new look that you are going for.

You could also add new finishes to floors, walls, or ceilings, install a new vanity, or get a new countertop for your existing kitchen.

By embarking upon a renovation in your home, you will get rooms that have been updated, making them more attractive and getting them to match your personal taste and preferences.

Another reason to go for a renovation is if you put your house on the market and want prospective buyers to find the property attractive to make an offer. A renovation is often enough to get interested buyers in the door and willing to consider the property for themselves.

Planning a Residential Remodeling

As you have read, a renovation is a project that is on a smaller scale since you will be preserving the areas as they are and only updating them to fit your current needs or taste.

On the other hand, when you envision a remodeled space, it will be completely transformed to the point where it may be used for a completely different purpose. This means that you may not only be changing the look of the space, but you would also be modifying its layout and function.

With the increased popularity of open concept designs, many homeowners have decided to remodel their kitchens, which would now open up to the dining room or an area that could include a family room and dining space.

Often, this project is initiated due to the homeowner’s desire to include a large island in the kitchen, which is impossible to have when there are walls all around.
