7 Things You Didn’t Know to Consider When Buying a New Mattress

December 29, 2021 by Pam Maynard

Most people know that it is important to buy a mattress, but they may not know exactly what to do when shopping for one. Shopping for mattresses can be confusing and overwhelming because so many options are available. To make things a bit easier, here are seven things that you should consider before making your purchase.

Budget

The first thing to think about is your budget. How much can you afford to spend on a mattress? It is important to set a budget and stick to it because there are so many options available. You don’t want to overspend on a mattress that you will only use for a few years.

Type

The next thing to consider is the type of mattress that you want. Do you want a firm or soft mattress? Do you prefer memory foam or innerspring mattresses? Innerspring mattresses have been around for a long time and are made with coils that give you support. Memory foam mattresses were first developed by NASA to improve the comfort of astronauts during take-offs and landings. They contour to your body shape and help relieve pressure points. There are many different types of mattresses to choose from, so take some time to decide which one is best for you.

Size Matters

You should also think about the size of the mattress. Do you need a twin, queen, or king-size mattress? You should also think about the size of your bedroom. If you have a small bedroom, it may be best to get a smaller mattress that won’t take up too much space. It is important to leave some empty floor space if you want to walk around or play with children in your room.

Firmness Level

The next thing is firmness level. How would you rate your current mattress on the “firmness scale?” This will help you decide what type of new mattress to buy. You can also consider this when buying a pillow or other bedding accessories. The firmness scale goes from one to ten, and it gives you an idea of how hard or soft your mattress will be when it arrives at your home. You can test out beds in different stores to know what level is best for you before making any purchases online.

Allergies

It is important to consider if there are any allergies that could affect your purchase. For example, people who have asthma should avoid mattresses with fire retardants in them because they worsen their symptoms and make breathing more difficult. Some doctors even recommend getting rid of all furniture made before 2005 because it contains chemicals like PBDEs (polybrominated diphenyl ethers).

Where Does It Go?

The next thing is where the mattress will be placed in your home. Is there enough furniture available? Will you put this on top of another bed frame? Again, there are many factors at play here, so make sure everything fits before making any purchases!

Comfort

Make sure the mattress is comfortable for you. It’s important that you get a good night’s sleep, so choose a mattress that feels good to you. Do a bit of research on your top three options. For example, you can read up on the Ghostbed mattress topper review if you are looking for memory foam beds and not just go for the first one in the shop. Reviews and complaints will give you a good indication of client satisfaction and what manufacturers promise the public.

If you’re not sure what type of mattress to buy, you can go into a store and test out some different ones. Lie down on each one for at least ten minutes so you can get a good idea of how it feels. Don’t be afraid to ask the salesperson for help, because they are usually very knowledgeable about the products they sell.
