Great Ideas for Creative Window Treatments
Guest post by James Harper
Lighting is vitally important for successful interior design, but many people still overlook their windows when they plan out a new room design. If you’re not sure what to do with your windows, then why not consider some of these creative window treatments. Perhaps one of them will fit your room, and help you to create the look you’ve always aimed for.
Extra-Long Curtains
If you’re decorating a large room, and are aiming for an imposing and traditional look, then extra-long curtains are a good option. Long, heavy curtains suit big rooms, and add a feeling of warmth. Avoid this design in smaller rooms, where the curtains may “swallow” the rest of the room and create a cramped feeling.
Patterned Roller Blinds
For smaller rooms, or rooms where you want to allow more light in, patterned roller blinds are a good option. Get the blinds made to measure, and opt for light colours, and bold, but not overly busy, patterns. Your patterned roller blinds will accent the decor when they’re drawn, and open fully to let in lots of light during the day.
White Valances
If you have a room that feels too dark, consider using white valances to hide dark wood around the windows. This will break up the room, and bring some fresh colour to what may otherwise be an oppressive design.
Layered Curtains
Carefully selected layered curtains can be a lovely finishing touch to sitting or dining room. It takes a good eye to pick the right styles and patterns. Take inspiration from the rest of the room for best results.
Wooden Venetian Blinds
Venetian blinds are smart, stylish, and ideal for the living room or the study. Wooden venetian blinds look best on fairly large windows. They are a good way to bring a touch of nature into the house, whilst also offering flexibility and control over the amount of light that comes into the room.
Velvet Curtains
If you have a room with a traditional fire place, consider rich, dark velvet curtains. They’ll add warmth to the room at night, and can be tied back during the day to let in maximum light.
Moulded Fixtures
Bay windows, and even windows with deep recesses, can often benefit from ornate moulded fixtures. If you go down this route, then make sure you dress the window to show off the fixtures – consider using roller blinds instead of curtains, or using a small valance to draw the eye to the fixture itself
Dressing a window can be more challenging than designing the rest of the room, but it’s worth the effort. How you style your window will alter the type, position, and brightness of any artificial lighting that you use in the room, and can also determine what the focal point of the room ends up being.
Remember that what looks good in the living room may not necessarily look good in a bedroom. Lighting is functional as well as aesthetic, so think carefully about what each room will be used for before you make any decorating decisions.
