Pregnancy and the Effect on Oral Health

March 19, 2013 by Pam Maynard

During pregnancy, women experience vast changes in their overall health condition. Due to hormonal changes in the body, some women tend to develop gum diseases which include swollen and inflamed gums, bleeding of the gums while brushing and so forth. It is quite important to maintain good oral hygiene during pregnancy to avoid such complications. Anchorage dentist recommends regular brushing and flossing of teeth twice every day to avoid gum diseases. It is quite important to maintain a healthy lifestyle with a balanced diet, exercises and dental checkups to obtain healthy teeth and gums.

Pregnancy gingivitis: The main symptom of pregnancy gingivitis is severe bleeding of the gums while brushing along with inflammation. It usually begins during the second month and increases during the eighth month of pregnancy. However, it tends to decrease after delivery. Pregnancy gingivitis is caused due to many reasons. The increase in the level of progesterone during pregnancy is one of the main reasons for this ailment. As progesterone increases, it results in the growth of certain types of bacteria. Moreover, during pregnancy the immune system of the body reacts differently to different types of bacteria.

Dentists recommend good oral hygiene during pregnancy to reduce the effects of gingivitis. It is important to brush your teeth twice daily to avoid gum problems and cavities. Regular flossing will also help to reduce gum problems. Doctors also recommend antimicrobial mouthwash to reduce the effects of bacteria and prevent gum infections. Dental visits are quite essential to ensure perfect oral health care. Pregnancy gingivitis needs to be treated by a professional dentist.

Pregnancy granuloma: Also known as pregnancy tumor, the pregnancy granuloma is another severe gum disease that affects pregnant women. It is mainly characterized by a growth in the gums which is neither dangerous nor cancerous. The main symptoms of this gum disease include the formation of red nodules in the gum line of the mouth. These red nodules can become an ulcer and bleed easily. Poor oral hygiene is the root cause of pregnancy granuloma. However, viruses, trauma and hormones can also be the causes of this condition.

Some women experience dry mouth during pregnancy which can be prevented by drinking plenty of water. Frequent vomiting can also cause tooth erosion which can lead to loss of tooth. It is important to consult a dentist in case of frequent vomiting as there are various medicines to prevent such dental issues.

Oral care is highly essential during pregnancy as it can affect the overall development of the baby too. If you are planning to visit a general dentist, Anchorage is the best option as there are a number of dental offices with advanced dental treatments for pregnant women and people of all ages.
