How Much Internet Do You Need for a Family Per Month

November 25, 2021 by Pam Maynard

If you have a growing family, then you are probably wondering how much internet you are going to need as new devices are brought into your home. While every family is slightly different, there are a few basic factors that you should consider when you are determining what type of internet package is going to be ideal for your own situation.

How Much Internet Do You Need for a Family Per Month

The Importance of an Adequate Internet Package

While it might be tempting to go with a cheaper package or second-rate ISP, that could result in some frustrating problems down the road. With slow internet speeds, it will be nearly impossible for your family to watch movies, play online games, and enjoy other forms of online entertainment. You should also carefully go over any internet plan that you are considering to ensure that you aren’t going to hit any data caps.

This is especially important if you have multiple devices that will be in use at the same time. Many families use the Spectrum internet for their tv, as WIFI for their phones and tablets as well as whatever computers are in the home.

If the internet doesn’t support the speed needed for all of the devices at the same time, there will likely be frustration. Kids doing homework while parents are checking email on their phones often require internet access and if either sees a slow internet connection, then problems and frustrations can occur.

Ideal Speeds

Before we get into the amount of data or internet that you need, let’s talk about internet speed as that tends to be where the biggest difference is between internet service providers. Internet access doesn’t go very far if you have to wait up to a minute for web pages to load or if you don’t have fast enough internet to stream videos.

For basic video streaming on platforms such as Netflix, YouTube or Zoom, you’ll likely require around 25 Mbps. However, if you want high-definition steaming, your streaming speeds should be between 50 Mbps and 100 Mbps.

This number is closer to 100 Mbps if you plan on having more than three family members using the internet at the same time. For larger families or those who have more than five devices connected simultaneously, over 150 Mbps is going to be ideal.

Capped Data Plans

Over the last few years, many online services have begun to use up a huge amount of data. If your kids download a few games every month or you have multiple devices streaming movies at the same time, then you could easily exceed a provider’s data cap. Once that cap is hit, you might be charged quite a bit extra or even have your upload and download speeds throttled.

Even unlimited data plans tend to have a decrease in internet speed after a certain amount of consumption is reached. With that in mind, consider looking at more than just the amount of data per month, but also the speeds at which you’ll receive once a certain cap is hit.

Unlimited Data

Many families with more than three devices running at the same time often opt for unlimited streaming. There are quite a few reasons why so many families have switched over to unlimited internet packages. In addition to being more affordable than ever, many unlimited internet packages will allow you to stream HD movies and videos whenever you would like with no effect on your internet speed.

You won’t have to worry about lowering the quality of your movies or even avoiding certain forms of entertainment because you might hit your data cap.

In addition to finding the perfect internet package, you must also make sure that you have the proper hardware. Without a high-quality modem and router, you will continue to struggle with lagging internet as more devices are used in your home. So search for internet providers near me for more information.
