Encouraging Children To Be Healthy Isn’t Easy, But It’s Worth it

October 2, 2021 by Pam Maynard

Encouraging your children to be healthy might feel like the hardest task in the world. We understand this, we promise that we do, but this doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t do your absolute best. If you stick with it, then in the end you will see the results that you are looking for. If you’re not really sure where to start with this, then it’s a good thing that you have come across this article.

Down below, we are going to be looking at some of the things that you can do to encourage your children to be healthy, so keep reading if you would like to find out more.

Make Exercise Fun

The first thing that we are going to suggest to you is that you find a way to make exercise fun. Kids don’t want to do workouts like adults at the gym, unless they have seen you doing them on a regular basis since they were little. Then, they might want to join in just so that they can be like their parents.

However, you might find that this fades a little as they get older, meaning that you need to start finding ways for exercise to be fun!

This might mean that you spend a day climbing a mountain and playing games on the way up. It might mean that you all go swimming and then see who can swim the fastest, having races between you. Swimming is a fantastic form of exercise for anyone, and it’s a lot of fun for children. It’s something a little different to walking around all the time, which is nice for them.

It could also be that you want to get them into a sport, so you start playing sports together. Sport is a lot more fun than a regular workout, which is why so many people like them so much. See if you can get your children into a sport to get their exercise in.

Healthy Snacks Can Look Cool

Fun Food For Kids

When you are trying to get your kids to eat healthy snacks, you might find that they are put off by the look of them. If this is the case, then you need to try and be more creative with the snacks that you are providing them with. You can use cool shape cutters to make exciting looking snacks without having to go through too much effort.

For example, you can make cucumber moons, and then create everything around it as a starry night. It’s not that difficult to do, it just means it might take a little longer, but if it gets them to eat and enjoy it, that’s the main thing.

Don’t forget that our first taste of food is always with our eyes, so when we look at something that doesn’t look appealing, it puts us off. The same is true for children, so make sure that the snack looks appealing!

Family Meal Times

We recommend setting a rule in your home that at least one meal has to be eaten together per day. This can be breakfast or dinner as it most likely won’t be lunch due to conflicting schedules, but you all need to sit down and eat together. You can make sure that at least one of the meals that they are eating that day is healthy and full of nutrients, and you can also spend this time bonding with your family.

Ask them about their plans for the day or what they have done that day depending on what meal you are sharing, and really talk about things. It will bring you closer as a family spending this time together, and you know they are eating well, at least this once.

If They Aren’t Feeling Well

If your children aren’t feeling well, then they need to know what to do. For example, you need to rest when you are not feeling good which means you are either in bed or on the sofa watching or reading something. The rest is necessary for your body to start to feel better which is why it is what is recommended.

If you are worried but you can’t get a doctor’s appointment, then you can look at something like Simple Online Doctor where you may be able to get some advice and help.

Make sure that when they are feeling poorly, they know that things have to change. They must drink plenty of fluids, eat minimal amounts if they are sick until they feel better and so on.

Talk About Their Feelings

Finally, their mental health is important too and you want to encourage them to talk about their feelings. Make sure that they know that your home is a safe space, and talking to you is a good thing. Don’t let them isolate themselves, as if they do this now, it might be a habit that they are never able to break.

Encourage your children to have open and clear communication with you and everyone else in the household without getting upset or angry with them. They need to feel supported or they will never open up again.

The best way to do this is to make sure that you are also doing this. Let them know that you also have feelings, and try to express them in a healthy way rather than screaming the house down when it all gets too much. This is the best thing that you can do for them, show them that you are not perfect, and they don’t have to be.

Encouraging Children To Be Healthy Isn't Easy, But It's Worth it

We hope that you have found this article helpful, and now see some of the things that you should be doing in order to encourage your children to be healthy. It might not be the easiest thing in the world to do, but that doesn’t mean that you should give up. Getting your kids to be healthy will be the best thing that you have ever managed to do, of that we can promise you that.

Of course, it’s true that you are never fully going to be able to control their health, but you can give them the knowledge they need to make the right choices when they are away from home.
