Top Tips For Organizing Your Shed or Garage

July 9, 2021 by Pam Maynard

The weather is great and your garden is calling, but you must first get to your tools. You are in luck if you have a garden shed or garage, but for many people, the thought of climbing over piles of dusty rakes, shovels, and brooms and battling with cobwebs to get what you need is too daunting, and so the garden goes untouched – again. here, we look at how to organize your shed or garage.

#1 Think about what you need

The first step in reorganizing your shed is determining which items are necessary. Sheds are typically small, and most people attempt to store far too much in them. Be realistic about how much you can fit in there.

If you are constructing a new shed, take stock and make sure you choose a size that will meet your needs. During the winter, for example, you may require space for your lawnmower or outdoor lawn furniture or replacement parts for Ryobi power equipment.

#2 Put things where you actually need them

If your garage is far from your garden, don’t keep your brooms and shovels inside. Similarly, if your workstation is in the garage, don’t store your power tools in an outdoor shed. Put them as close to possible to where you will be using them.

#3 Be ruthless with what you keep and what you throw out

Inquire within yourself: Is it really necessary to have four rakes, two hammers, and three different trimmers? How frequently do I use this specialized piece of equipment, such as a tile saw? If it is once a year or less, sell them. You can always look at borrowing or hiring if you need it again in the future, but for now, the money and the space would be more useful.

#4 Hang things up

Some tools, such as shovels and rakes can be hung on a wall. You could look at using a track system with hooks can be used. Hammer heavy-duty nails or drill hooks into wall studs for a less expensive version. Allow enough space between your tools so that you can easily pull them off the wall and replace them once you are finished.

#5 Use adjustable shelving

Keep your floor clear and save space by using adjustable shelving. The grates allow dust and dirt to fall to the floor, making cleaning easier. Furthermore, the adjustability allows you to change the height and placement of the shelves as your storage needs change. Shelving is particularly useful for things like pots, which can clutter up shed flooring and be a trip hazard.

#6 Keep it clean

Sheds can often appear cluttered as a result of what we keep in them. Paint it white or a consistent and light color to make it easier on the eyes. You will be able to notice things more easily. Plan on spending time straightening up your shed once a week or once a month, depending on how frequently you use it.
