5 Tips for Affording Travel During Your Retirement

March 16, 2021 by Pam Maynard

One of the best parts of retirement is the ability to travel more. The day will come when your kids leave the nest, and when that time comes, you’ll want to spend those days doing things you love – things you didn’t necessarily get to do when your kids were home.

However, in order to travel as much as you please during retirement, you need to be able to afford it. With that in mind, here are 5 tips you can use to help pay for your travel adventures once you’re in retirement.

5 Tips for Affording Travel During Your Retirement

Start Saving Early

Perhaps the best thing you can do is start saving early. By putting away a little bit of money enough money that is specifically for travel, you can save up a large sum when you finally enter retirement. This is especially true if your kids are still young and you have some years before they leave home.

While you want to take your kids on trips, there’s no harm in putting a small fraction of that away just for you and your spouse.

Even just a few dollars per month over a period of years can make a big difference when it comes to affording that trip you’ve always wanted to take. Spend some time analyzing your current budget and see how much you can afford to put into a separate savings account that is just for retirement travel.

Bring in Extra Income

Besides saving up for travel expenses, the other thing you can do is look to bring in some extra income. No matter what age you are now if you can bring in a little extra money each month and put that away for travel expenses, you’ll have an easier time taking all those trips you want in the future. There are a few good ways to go about bringing in extra income.

One option is to take on a part-time job. Whether you’re retired or not, finding another job for a few hours each week will certainly fill up your travel savings account in no time.

Another option is to downsize once your kids leave home. You may be able to sell your current home, move into a smaller place, and use the profits to fund your travels.

Finally, you can consider a reverse mortgage. A reverse mortgage allows you to borrow money against your home, which might be a better option for those who don’t want to move. This reverse mortgage calculator from All Reverse Mortgage can help you determine how much you could receive from this plan.

Make Use of Credit Card Rewards

Credit card rewards are a good way to reduce travel expenses. Some credit cards offer points on all purchases, which can then be used to book travel arrangements at a discount. If you’re going to be spending money on things anyway, you might as well put the charges on a credit card and get some points you can use towards retirement travel. Here are the best travel rewards credit cards if you want to explore this route.

Find the Best Deals

However you intend to pay for your travels, you should work to find the best possible deal before setting out. If you can be a little flexible about where you want to go, and when you go there, you can often get some great discounts.

For example, some airlines offer steep discounts to places in their offseason. By going to a popular location at an unpopular time of year, you can still see the sights without paying as much.

You can also explore group travel options. There are travel organizations that are able to provide discounts to people traveling within a group. Going with a group not only allows you to save money, but you get to meet some great people along the way. Here are some great travel groups if you want to see what’s out there.

Look for Ways to Cut Costs

Finally, besides discounts from travel organizations, you can find ways to cut costs on your own. For example, instead of flying across the country, you could rent an RV and take a road trip. Or you could make use of sites like AirBNB.com to find places to stay rather than staying at hotels.

If you’re willing to pack light, you can also save money on baggage fees whenever you fly. For more ideas on how to cut costs when traveling, check out this guide.

Make the Most of Your Time

Your kids are finally out of the house so you better make the most of it. Think of all the places you’ve wanted to go with your spouse but couldn’t because you had kids at home. Start planning for how you’ll get there and put that plan into action.
