If you have ever done any housekeeping, you know all too well just how much work goes into cleaning, cooking, shopping, and other related tasks. Unfortunately, it gets even harder to do everything if you’re not getting as much help from your family as is needed. If you are exhausted and know it’s time to call in the reinforcements to help you with the daily chores, here are some creative ways you can get more of your family members to pitch in and complete various chores around the house.
Make a List
If you want to get your household organized and make sure everyone knows exactly what needs to be done, make a list of all your household chores. From vacuuming and dusting to taking out the trash and mowing the yard, having a visual reminder in front of everyone is an excellent way to start getting more help from everyone.
Assign Tasks Based on People’s Abilities
Once you have your list completed, you can then sit down with your spouse, the kids, and any other family members and start assigning tasks to everyone. When doing so, try to give people tasks based on their abilities as well as their likes and dislikes. For example, your spouse may enjoy doing yardwork, so let them mow the yard. However, your kids may like helping with the laundry, so let them do so. By giving people tasks they enjoy, you can avoid costly mistakes that may lead to the need for washer and dryer repair.
Positive Reinforcement
Whether it’s your spouse that vacuums the living room or your kids who take out the trash and feed the dog, using positive reinforcement for a job well-done will go far in keeping your family members motivated to continue helping out around the house. Rather than getting mad if someone forgets to do something, instead compliment them on all they have done so far. By taking this approach, it’s likely you won’t have a family mutiny on your hands.
Dangling the Carrot
Finally, dangling a carrot in front of everyone for completing their tasks will almost always work. For example, if you let everyone know at the beginning of the week that Saturday will be pizza night if all the chores are done by Friday, chances are everything will be perfect by Friday night.
By supporting one another and adding a little bit of fun in along the way, household chores can become fun for you and everyone else.
