How to Enjoy Nature During a Pandemic

March 4, 2021 by Pam Maynard

Getting outdoors and exploring is good for both your physical and mental health. Due to the current pandemic, we are spending more time glued to our computer screens, and nature has given us a welcomed break.

Whether you are an adventurous thrill-seeker, a parent looking to get their kids out of the house or someone who wants to see what their local neighborhood has to offer, stepping outside is the first step.

How to Enjoy Nature During a Pandemic

Here are our top tips for enjoying nature safely during a pandemic.

Stay Safe With Masks

Even when you are outside, there may be times when there are other people around. If you can’t socially distance, it is recommended you wear a high-quality face mask. Face masks come in different sizes, and you can even buy specially designed kids KN95 masks from retailers like Green Supply.

KN95 masks offer multilayer protection and filter up to 95 percent of airborne particles. When you buy a mask with a contoured fit and adjustable nose bridge, your child is more likely to keep it on. If your child is nervous about wearing a mask, different colors and prints will be appealing to little ones.

Immerse Yourself in Nature

If you are craving a mini getaway, a camping trip can help you create new memories while giving you a break from the daily routine. Your location and experience will determine where you go, but even beginners can safely immerse themselves in nature.

How to Enjoy Nature During a Pandemic

For example, if you have a young family, you could stay at a campground with amenities such as toilets and showers. You can spend the daylight hours exploring walking trails, swimming, fishing or playing by the beach. Before you go, make sure the camping spot has enough space as you will want to avoid overcrowded areas.

Want something more adventurous? Try rock climbing, bungee jumping or abseiling.

Discover Local Attractions

You don’t have to go away overnight to enjoy nature. Do some research because there are probably hidden gems in your neighborhood that you haven’t discovered yet.

You don’t need to spend money to find something new. There could be a big park by the river that is perfect for a picnic, a cycling track for the whole family or a quiet golf course nearby.

Make it interesting by creating a list of scavenger hunt items such as rocks, shells, leaves and sticks, and use them in an art project once you get home.

Get Into a Routine

If you are feeling isolated indoors, put “outside time” on your daily to-do list. Exercising outdoors will help to boost your endorphins and make you feel revived and recharged.

Choose an activity that suits your level of fitness and gradually build it up. You could start by taking your dog for a walk around the block, and as you gain the confidence you could switch to running.

Gardening is another great way to stay fit and spend time in nature. You can even grow your own fresh produce for cooking, or flowers to fill your vases. The key is to make it a habit, and something you repeat daily.

Enjoying Nature During a Pandemic

With more of us spending time indoors and in front of the computer screen, getting outdoors in nature can be beneficial to both our mental and physical health.

During a pandemic, there are a few ways you can safely enjoy nature. Take a mask with you in case you can’t socially distance, and start exploring your local area. You may like to plan an overnight trip to a quiet campsite.

If you need a daily pick-me-up, make going outside a routine. Whether it’s a walk around the block or an hour in the garden, you will feel revitalized and ready to tackle the rest of your to-do list.
