How to Save Money on Home Insurance

December 1, 2020 by Pam Maynard

Owning a home means shouldering the necessary responsibilities that come with it, including paying for home insurance. For some, skipping on home insurance may be part of their cost-cutting strategies. However, this method can backfire and severely affect their lives. It is important to know that there are ways on how you can save money when it comes to paying your homeowner’s insurance. Here are some of the ways:

Tips for Saving Money on Home Insurance

Don’t Forget to Shop Around

Homeowner’s policies vary from one provider to another. To be sure that you are not paying too much, make sure to shop around and compare prices. However, you have to compare them accordingly. Check if the only difference is the cost. Sometimes, a provider will have lower costs because what they offer is not comprehensive enough. In the end, you might be paying more. Ask your friends and family for their recommendations and do some research. Getting quotes from at least three providers should be enough to help you decide. Aside from comparing prices, it will also help if you would factor in their customer service. After all, you’d be dealing with them when it is time to file for a claim.

Get an Auto and Home Insurance Bundle

Most insurance providers offer a slew of insurance, including auto and other umbrella liability policies. When you buy bundled insurance policies under one provider, you can take advantage of a lower premium. However, it is still best to make the comparison by checking if the combined price is much lower than getting separate coverages from different insurance companies.

Do Regular Home Maintenance

Insurance companies would often inspect your home to see its present condition. Making the necessary fixes in your home will be taken as a positive sign that your home is primed for safety. This condition gives the inspectors the confidence that you are less likely to make a claim. Thus, they will grant you a lower premium and higher coverage. As such, it will benefit you if you upgrade your heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, electrical wirings, and plumbing system to make it disaster-free.

Install Home Security

Besides giving you peace of mind, installing home security systems, such as burglar alarms, carbon monoxide detectors, smoke alarms, and deadbolt systems, makes you eligible for discounts. Try talking with your insurance agent to hear about their recommendations on what methods would give you the most discount.

Consider Group Insurance

Ask your employer if they have a group insurance program and check if it includes a homeowner’s policy. Another option you can check are professional or business groups that you are part of. Sometimes, they will offer discounted group insurance packages. Make sure that you still do your due diligence by researching whether you are indeed getting a better deal than what you can find in other providers.

Stay Loyal

If you have been with the same insurance provider for a number of years, you can ask for a discount as part of their perks. Still, it doesn’t hurt if you periodically shop around to find the best deals available.

Understand Your Insurance Policy

You have to be keen in understanding your insurance policy. First, you should know that the package would often equate to the cost to rebuild the home and not its real estate value. When computing, you should not include the land value when factoring the amount of policy to buy, only what you should be paying for in case of problems. If not, you’ll end up paying more in your premium.

These are just some of the things you should consider when you want to save money on your home insurance policy. Always factor in your needs and your budget into the process to ensure savings.
