How to Buy the Most Suitable Bamboo Flooring

August 22, 2020 by Pam Maynard

There is a lot of conflicting information out there about bamboo flooring, making it hard to choose the right bamboo flooring for your home. The truth is that bamboo flooring has evolved significantly over the years, and not all of it is created equally. As a result, there is a lot of inaccurate information, though you need to consider various key factors before you buy bamboo flooring. This page discusses how you can buy suitable bamboo flooring for your home.

How to buy the most suitable bamboo flooring

Check the type of room to use bamboo flooring

Bamboo flooring is a durable and versatile product, making it a favorite option for most rooms in your home. So you can use bamboo flooring in living areas, hallways, bedrooms, and many other rooms.

You can use engineered bamboo flooring or solid bamboo flooring which are considered stable to make them suitable for rooms with temperature and humidity that fluctuates. This means rooms such as utility rooms, kitchen, and rooms with log burners are some of the best areas you can use this bamboo flooring.

This is because the bamboo floor will usually expand and contract depending on the climate changes. The only room you cannot use bamboo flooring is in the bathroom because the floor can be water-resistant but not waterproof.

Both solid and engineered bamboo flooring is also compatible with underfloor heating. As explained earlier, these can expand and contract with changes in temperature, so check with your bamboo flooring supplier to make sure that you’re buying a suitable bamboo floor.

The existing sub-floor

The existing sub-floor refers to the base floor that is already in your home. Some of the most common types of sub-floors include wooden joists, wooden floorboards, and concrete.

Therefore, before you install the bamboo floor, make sure that your sub-floor is level, flat, and dry to prevent damaging the floor when you install it. But the installation method can vary depending on the sub-floor type, so ensure that you consult an expert before fitting the bamboo floor. You can also buy online various types of bamboo flooring that meet your sub-floor type.

While the bamboo floor can be durable, you should remember that different styles of flooring can give various strengths. So if the expected traffic will be high, such as in hallways and kitchens, then consider installing strand-woven bamboo flooring because it has enough strength properties.

Style and color of bamboo flooring

You can find bamboo flooring in three major categories, which are vertical, horizontal, and strand-woven. Vertical bamboo usually has thinner grain on its surface while horizontal bamboo has wider grain on its surface and strand-woven bamboo has random grain looks.

Besides having three different structures, you can also find bamboo flooring either in a carbonized effect, a rustic effect, or a natural color. Because bamboo flooring is derived from a natural product, grain and color patterns can vary slightly. But you can still get a unique look by choosing bamboo flooring with different color stains, such as chocolate, white, and black.

Thankfully, bamboo flooring is affordable, making it ideal as a quality alternative to hardwood flooring. The price can vary depending on the fitting system, construction of the prank, and the finish you want to have.
