Painted Sunflower Rocks

A great activity to do with your kids this summer is rock painting! It gets outside- to find the rocks- and they use their creativity and focus to paint their favorite design.  We hope you enjoy this tutorial for Painted Sunflower Rocks.  Sunflowers have always been one of my favorite flowers- they make me smile!  I hope this fun rock painting activity makes you smile too!

Materials needed for your Painted Sunflower Rocks:

Sunflower Painted Rocks

  • Medium-Sized round rock, about 2” across
  • Pencil
  • Americana Multi-Surface Satin Paint in Canary, Orange Sherbet, Coffee Bean, Cotton Ball
  • fine paint brush
  • Paint pen in black

 

Instructions:

Draw an outline of the sunflower onto the rock with a pencil. Start by drawing a large circle in the center. Then, draw the individual petals, ensuring the shapes are wider at the base and taper to a point at the tips.

Sunflower Painted Rocks

Mix 3 parts Canary with 1 part Cotton Ball with Canary. Let dry and then paint a second coat of the same mixture. Let dry.

Mix equal parts Canary with Orange Sherbet. Using a wet paint brush, lightly brush over the painted petals adding a few short strokes at the base of each petal tapering to less at the tips.

Draw an additional layer of petals in between the painted petals.

Paint the second layer of petals using Canary. Let dry and then paint a second coat in Canary for additional coverage.

Paint the center circle of the flower in Coffee Bean. Let dry.

Mix equal parts Coffee Bean and Orange Sherbet. Using a wet paint, dab unevenly throughout the circle. Let dry.

Using a wet paint brush, dab unevenly throughout the circle using Orange Sherbet. Let dry.

Using a dry paintbrush, dab a few additional spots of Orange Sherbet just in the center.

Lastly, using a black paint pen, draw dots over the painted centers.
