4 Ways to Make Your Family Pool Safe

July 15, 2020 by Pam Maynard

A pool is a great way for a family to cool off together in the summer without having to deal with crowds at the public pool. A pool might even increase the value of your home when you are ready to sell. As great as they are, pools can be a liability. Here are four ways to make your family pool safe.

4 Ways to Make Your Family Pool Safe

Establish Rules

It’s your responsibility to keep everyone on your property safe. To help increase safety, you need to establish clear rules, especially if you have children. You should not allow children to swim unsupervised. You should also prohibit running around the pool and risky behavior, such as diving from an unsafe place. Enforce the rules sternly since you will be liable in the case of an accident.

Build a Fence

An open pool can be tempting for people walking by on a hot day. Don’t make it so easy for people to sneak into your pool by building a fence around the pool area. You can even put a lock on the fence to keep people out. A smart lock will document every time someone goes into the pool area. You may even consider installing an alarm for when you are away.

Be Prepared

If an accident does happen, you want to be prepared. You should have a first aid kit readily available in the pool area. If someone does get hurt, you will be able to tend to them until you can get them to a medical facility. You should also learn CPR in the case someone almost drowns. You may have to help resuscitate them.

Keep up on Maintenance

A pool can be quite a bit of work. You need to be ready for the responsibility. You should clean the pool accessories like the solar cover, pump and pool heater regularly and add the necessary chemicals. When done, you should put the chemicals away somewhere safe. You don’t want any young children or pets to find them. You should also keep the pool area as clean as possible.

Pick up anything that could potentially be a tripping hazard. You also want to install stainless steel drainage gates to help water drain away from the pool center, keeping the area safe.

Getting a pool will make everyone in the house happy. However, you want everyone to be happy and safe. These tips will help ensure that the pool is used properly. As long as everyone remains safe, you’ll be able to enjoy summer days laughing and playing in the pool with the people you love.
