How to Help Kids Who Are Struggling with School

May 17, 2020 by Pam Maynard

The public school system works well for many students, but it does not always meet the learning needs of every student. If you have kids who are struggling in school, you may want to consider some academic support measures or alternative education options.

Family Guidance

Parents and older siblings can often answer questions about homework or guide students through a difficult assignment without doing the work for them. Whether learning a foreign language or mastering a new math concept, chances are good that older family members who have been through school may be able to help. Family members who have been out of school for a while can help younger children recite math facts, practice spelling words, or work on a science experiment.

Tutoring

Many schools offer free tutoring or tutoring services for a fee. Tutors are usually available in most subjects being taught, and they may provide supplemental activities and learning materials if needed. Some tutors will work one-on-one with a student or organize a small group of students who are studying the same subject. Schools may offer tutoring online as well as by appointment. If tutors are not available through the school, parents can hire a private tutor to help kids with tough assignments.

Online Resources

There are many kinds of online resources available to help students at all levels of education. For example, English courses may require writing assignments for which students need extra help. Online sources provide free or low-cost assistance with writing assignments without allowing kids to plagiarize others’ work. There are handbooks for core subjects like math, English, science, and social studies along with other subjects that students may be learning. Videos and programs like Ted Talks or Master Class segments may also prove beneficial to students who need to learn challenging lessons.

Private or Charter Schools

If a child is not performing to his or her potential at school, parents may want to consider switching the student to a k-8 public charter school or a private school. The core curriculum will remain the same in order to meet each state’s learning standards, but the methods of teaching and student assignments may differ from the regular public school programs. Children learn things in different ways. Some prefer to listen to lessons while others want to explore concepts spatially or kinesthetically. Visual flashcards may help others, while rhyming and game-playing are helpful for certain subjects.

Explore learning options with your child to find the ones that will best meet his or her learning interests. Finding the right approach for your child will help him or her to become academically successful.
