4 Ways Families Can Become More Self-Sufficient

May 4, 2020 by Pam Maynard

During unpredictable times, it helps to be self-sufficient to weather tough challenges easier. You and your family can learn to adopt certain practices that will help make you more sufficient and less reliant on certain resources that could be in limited supply. Here are four ways that families like yours can become more self-sufficient.

4 Ways Families Can Become More Self-Sufficient

Grow Your Own Food

Many of the food items that you buy in stores can probably be grown on your own in a home garden or with the use of indoor containers. Carrots, tomatoes, and green beans are just some of the produce items that you can grow and harvest yourself so that your family will always have an abundant food supply. Garlic greens and peppers can often be grown indoors if you have the right containers and with the right care.

Produce Your Own Meat and Dairy

You can even cultivate many of your own meat and dairy products with the proper resources. If you have enough space in your yard and your local laws allow, you can try raising your own chickens and other livestock animals that will eventually be slaughtered, butchered and used to prepare many of your favorite meat dishes. You can also designate certain chickens to lay eggs to increase your food supply. If you don’t have enough space on your yard for cattle, you can get some goats to produce goat milk to use for many of your dairy products.

Use Renewable Energy Sources

Gas, electricity and other commonly used forms of energy are known to cause environmental harm and strain natural resources. With renewable energy, you’ll have an endless supply of energy to power your home while helping the environment. Solar energy, which comes directly from sunlight, is one of the most popular forms of renewable energy, and professional solar panel installation services are available if you want to order solar energy panels. Wind power and hydropower from water are other renewable energy sources that can be good for your home.

4 Ways Families Can Become More Self-Sufficient

Make Your Own Clothes

Instead of buying clothes at the store, you can make many of your garments with thread, yarn and other materials. Sweaters, socks and scarves to keep you and your family members warm during the winter months can be knitted from yarn. Learning to sew by hand will be another good skill to learn so that you can sew together fabrics and repair any damaged seams or hemlines.

Self-sufficiency is an excellent survival skill that you and your family can learn. Learning this important skill can be especially beneficial when resources that many other people use aren’t so readily available.
