Train Your Dog to Be a Good Citizen This Summer

March 21, 2020 by Diane

Do you also love to enjoy summertime with your canine friend, your cherished dog? Well, summer is the best time to enjoy yourself, have outdoor activities, like hiking, fishing, traveling, do a lot of fun, and many more. It is even more fun when you have a dog as he can add more fun to the enjoyment. Your dog is probably your best friend and an indispensable part of your family. But have you ever thought whether he can behave like a good citizen in public or not? He may listen to you, obey you, be a gentleman in front of the people he knows. But can you depend on his in-door behavior when it comes to the fact of behaving among unknown faces? The answer is, he needs to be taught to act like a great canine citizen. You need to train and teach him so that he behaves well, and be in the accessories you put on him, like collars, leashes, and many more. While choosing the accessories, you also need to be careful of selecting the products made of the best comfortable materials, like a high-quality leather dog collar, to ensure the convenience of your pup.

Training your dog does not mean that it should involve a lot of activities. It can be a fun task for both of you, and if it is summertime you are training your dog, it is even more fun!

Train Your Dog to be a Good citizen This Summer

As already said, training your dog to be a great canine citizen involves some easy steps of teaching and rewarding him. It does not need a lot of pieces of equipment. You have to set a plan, do research on your dog so that he can pass the Canine Good Citizen(CGC) with good grades. If you are searching for a precise guide to training your pooch, here is a comprehensive one.

Acceptance of Strangers

The first thing you need to train your dog is on his acceptance of strangers. He may behave with honor and obedience with you, but he also needs to accept others. He should not be shy and aggressive by jumping or pulling in front of new people.

For this, you have to leash your dog, walk with him, and let a friend he does not know to enter the room. When you greet your friend, the dog should not jump or pull and seat gently when your friend pets the dog. If he behaves aggressively, the friend will leave the room. You have to repeat this process several times so that your pup understands he should not behave aggressively rather be gentle and let the friend pet him. Do not forget to reward him when he acts according to the need.

Stand Still While Being Groomed

A very significant training you have to give your favorite pooch is for his appearance and grooming. Train him well so that he can stand still when anyone grooms him. While training, you should feed him his favorite treats to feel rewarded and obey you. Try the steps of inspecting his feet and ears while feeding and let other members of the family and friends groom the dog.

Loose Lead Walking

The next training would be to follow your steps and turn while walking by you on a loose lead. At the very beginning of this step, train him in your home, then practice in a yard and when you feel he can concentrate on your moves and steps, you can guide him on a more distracting place.

Stay Calm

The fourth training you should give him is to stay calm and follow you in a crowded place. Keep the dog on a loose leash and take him to a place where there are a lot of people. Some dogs may get distracted by people wearing caps, kids, or baby strollers. In the very first steps, keep your dog away from these distractions and decrease the distance with successive trails. To encourage him, treat him with roasted chicken, toys and many more.

Sit and Lie Down

Now, you have to train him to sit and lie down and stay in one place obeying by the command of the handler. To teach him, command the dog to sit or lie down and stay in the place and increase the time with successive sessions. Have patience when you run the concourses, and again, do not forget to reward him.

Come When Called

Next, train him to respond when you call him, and unless the call, he should be in the same place. It may be very challenging for the dog to avoid the distractions and concentrate on your appeal. To make him focus on you, start the training by feeding him 10 favorite treats in a line.

Other Dogs and Distractions

One of the most challenging parts of training is to teach your dog to keep calm when he crosses another dog. For this, walk by other dogs with your pooch and then let him mingle with them. He should not be aggressive or get over in response.

Train your dog to behave confidently instead of being afraid, or running away when there is any distraction. Feed him what he loves, take him amid distractions, and train him to keep calm and confident.

Stay Calm in Your Absence

The last part of the training session would be to teach him to be peaceful in your absence. For this, keep him away from you for a while, and gradually increase the time. He should not be nervous or bark continuously and stay calm when anyone else handles him.

With every training session he completes, it will be helpful for you for faster progress if you encourage your cherished pooch with his favorite treats.

Perfect training will turn your pup into a good citizen for which you may be aspiring for long. And what can be better than training him on a sunny summer day so that both of you can enjoy the times of training?
