If you’re like many women, transitioning back into the workforce after being a stay-at-home mom will require some mental adjustments. It’ll also require some planning. While it’s nearly impossible to control how long it’ll take you to mentally adjust to working outside the home, you do have some control over your day-to-day responsibilities. Here’s a look at four steps you can take to get back into the swing of things.
Prepare the Night Before
Making sure your clothes are washed, ironed and laid out allows you to correct any possible issues with your wardrobe. The same can be said for preparing your lunch ahead of time and putting together the notes you made for the staff meeting. You’ll experience even less stress if you encourage your kids to do the same.
Childcare
Since you’re not going to be home during the day now, it’s likely that you’re anxious to work out childcare arrangements. Many schools have aftercare programs that allow kids to stay with licensed caregivers from the end of school until the end of the parents’ workday. It probably goes without saying that you’ll also want to have a list of emergency contacts in case something goes wrong. These need to be left with your child’s caregivers.
Scheduled Cleaning
Once you return to work, keeping on top of the household chores becomes harder. While it’s important to teach your kids to be responsible for their cleaning chores, it might be important for your sanity to look into getting a scheduled professional cleaning at least once a week. This will go more smoothly if you make your needs clear to your family. It’s likely they don’t know how to help you. Many stay-at-home moms take care of most of the cleaning, which leaves their families out of the loop once it’s time to return to work.
Preparing Meals Ahead
Cooking big batches of meals and freezing them ahead of time can be a Godsend once you begin working again. It prevents you from having to come up with a meal idea right when you get home. It also helps your family on the nights you have to work late. They can just take a meal out of the freezer and heat it up.
Returning to work will go a lot more smoothly if you do a little planning. Taking steps to ensure that meals are prepared or that the cleaning gets done goes a long way toward making your transition back to the work world a success. Additionally, sharing your plans with your family allows them to support you once your schedule begins to change and empowers them to help themselves during those times when you’re not home.
