Dog Care Should Be A Family Affair

February 6, 2020 by Pam Maynard

As any existing pet-owners will tell you, it’s astounding how much a four-legged friend can transform your life and that of your kids. Their wagging tail alone can help to boost your mood like little else.

Yet, when you consider getting a pet, especially one that requires high levels of care like a dog, you may have one pressing concern – will all the responsibility fall on your shoulders?

We’ve all seen it happen; parents buy a dog for the family and end up as the sole carer for their new fluffy charge. It can be incredibly frustrating, and it isn’t always best for your pooch, either.

Dog Care Should Be A Family Affair

Sadly, overcoming this issue can be easier said than done. But, something as simple as delegating chores like walking around the block or keeping that food bowl topped with nutritious offerings like those found here could see you avoiding this eventuality. Even if your family is reluctant to get into a regular and rotating routine, reminding them of the following benefits for doing so could well be the push they need to see that dog care really should be a family affair, after all.

The lesson of responsibility

Obviously, you got a dog because they’re so darn cute and irresistible. But, as a parent, you were probably also aware of the fact that four-legged friends are fantastic for teaching youngsters (and sometimes adults) about responsibility. At least, they can be if you make sure your kids stay focused on at least some aspects of overall care. Being involved in feeding, walking, or even grooming will show them that dogs aren’t just there to look cute. Instead, they’ll begin to see the importance of nurturing their pet and meeting those care needs at all times.

A healthier life for your pet

Pets come to know their primary caregivers well, and if you’re the one that they want, they’ll pine for you or even fall into depression when you aren’t around. That’s not ideal, and it’s certainly no way to keep your dog in perfect health. By comparison, care from a range of sources will provide a much richer and more satisfying experience for your pooch. This way, their tail will wag equally when any member of the family gets home. As a result, they’ll spend less time waiting around and more time enjoying everyone’s company.

An exercise in bonding

Dogs are fantastic for a lot of things, and one of them is bringing families together. At least, it is if you make sure you’re all equally involved! As kids grow and work lives differ, it’s not unusual to grow apart as a unit. But, if you’re sharing doggy duties, then you at least have something in common. This alone could keep the conversation flowing and could even see you spending much-needed quality time when heading out for group walks, etc. This will become invaluable when your kids are older, so get into good care habits now, and enjoy a closer family as a result!
