What Should You Be Looking For In A Breast Milk Alternative?

January 1, 2020 by Pam Maynard

There is a great deal of pressure placed on women to breastfeed their newborns. However, many women, for one reason or another, are unable to breastfeed to meet the nutritional needs of their children. Whether it is too painful or there are serious medical issues involved, these mothers need to find alternative sources of nutrition to ensure the well-being of their children.

Thankfully, there are a host of breast milk alternatives available these days. From established formula brands such as Karicare to other replacement products, there are many options to suit the unique needs of any mother and any child. Having a better awareness of what these options are will help you make the best decision for you.

What Should You Be Looking For In A Breast Milk Alternative?

Let’s look at some of the essential things that you need to look for in a breast milk alternative.

Consider The Convenience Of Formulas

Infant formulas are likely the most common option for mothers who need to use a breast milk alternative. There are many different formula variants at most supermarkets these days. This makes them a useful choice for providing your child with adequate nutrition with minimal stress.

Formulas are available in either powdered, concentrated or ready-to-use variants. The first two options require a bit of extra preparation before they can be readily consumed by your child, though the third adds an extra bit of time-saving convenience to your childcare routine. Depending on how frazzled you are with the responsibilities in your life, you can make a decision on the best variant of formula for you.

Formulas are great because they contain everything that an infant needs to flourish. This includes proteins, carbohydrates and fats as well as a host of vitamins and minerals. There are also specialty brands of formula that can accommodate more specific needs of a child. These include things like lactose-free variants as well as plant-based options for those living a plant-based lifestyle.

Another factor you should consider when it comes to purchasing formula is the source of the ingredients. Many mothers are opting for organic options these days to ensure that there are no harmful chemicals or additives in the product that they are feeding their babies.

Consider Goat’s Or Sheep’s Milk Formulas

As an alternative to the conventional cow’s milk formulas, you can also explore other options as well. Goat and sheep-milk derived options are perfect for providing nutrition by themselves or as part of a more comprehensive mixed routine. These formulas contain a different nutritional profile in contrast to cow’s milk formulas and so may help to ensure that your child is getting a well-rounded diet. They are also easier to digest than cow’s milk formulas which makes them a great choice for some infants who have lactose intolerance issues.

Consider Breast milk Fortifier

If you are able to breastfeed your child but want to ensure that they are receiving enough nutrition, then you need to consider breast milk fortifier. This highly nutritious additive is useful for bolstering the nutrition of your breast milk. However, it cannot be used as a standalone option as it is incomplete in its nutritional profile.

Discuss Breast milk Alternatives With Your Doctor

Since there are so many options when it comes to breast milk alternatives and since there are many factors to consider when making the right choice, it is important that you find the best information possible on this topic.

Discussing your concerns and questions with your family doctor will allow you to explore this information in more specific detail. They are more aware of what the unique needs of your child are and they will be able to highlight any ways that your child may benefit from specific breast milk alternative products.
