What Are Some Of The Most Common Travel Fails?

December 30, 2019 by Pam Maynard

The best travel stories often involve some kind of fail or mistake that a person had to recover from. While these stories can occasionally be funny, some travel mistakes are serious and can bring your plans to an abrupt end.

Learning from the mistakes of others and avoiding common travel fails needs to be a priority for all travellers and especially travel newbies. Skimming through some of the most common mistakes that people have made will help you to get off on the right foot with your travel plans.

To help you learn from the mistakes of other travellers, let’s explore some of the most common travel fails.

What Are Some Of The Most Common Travel Fails?

Skipping On Travel Insurance

Many travellers, especially those who travel infrequently or who are new to extended travel, neglect to purchase travel insurance. Some believe that travel insurance is an unnecessary expense that only adds to the total cost of your trip. When you are living on a shoestring budget while you are abroad, it may be hard to justify spending money on something that you believe you will never use.

However, the unexpected happens on a regular basis while you are travelling. Experienced travellers know that delayed flights, lost bags and even medical emergencies, of varying severity, are a matter of course when you are on the move. Having travel insurance could allow you to avoid the financial damages that such events can have and reimburses you to ensure that your plans are not interrupted. Making sure to take some time and explore travel insurance options which suit your travel need before you leave.

Forgetting To Get Vaccinated

Depending on where you are planning to travel, it is usually important to get properly vaccinated before you leave. Vaccinations are required to enter some disease-prone areas of the world and you may be turned around and denied entry if you lack proof of immunisation. Some travellers have had their trips brought to an abrupt halt because they failed to look into this matter before they left.

Some vaccinations are not legally required but are recommended when you enter certain countries. It is also a good idea to purchase these as well. Despite the sometimes-hefty price tag, they will keep you healthy throughout your trip. If you are heading to an area where there is a significant risk of acquiring a serious disease, then do not take your chances.

Getting Robbed With Currency Conversion

While you may not be literally robbed by currency exchanges while you are abroad, the exchange rate offered by many currency bureaus is a complete rip-off. Rookie travellers mistakenly assume that they will have an easy time finding local currency for a fair price in a foreign country. While sometimes this may be the case, it is important to not take the chance, especially, if your budget is already tight.

Stop by your local bank or financial institution before you leave to acquire some foreign currency. Having enough to last you for a few days will allow you to source out a more viable way of exchanging money in the long-term, rather than relying on exchanges in airports or near tourist hotspots.

Newbie travellers are prone to making many more mistakes unless they take the time to educate themselves. Heading out on a trip without doing any research on the destination or the cost of living there is a sure way to run into trouble.

Use the internet and read travel blogs about the destination you have chosen to learn about how to navigate the nuances of the local culture more easily. This way, you will avoid these and many more mistakes.
