Midlife Career Crisis? Then Read This!

September 26, 2019 by Diane

Crisis! It is not a calm word. However, I choose to use it here because that is precisely what it can feel like when you start to question your working life. In fact, it is pretty common for people to ask themselves questions about their career and whether it is the right fit for them. Of course, often the answer to all this question is to retrain and commit to another career. In fact, doing so could be the best thing that ever happens to you! Although there are bound to be some problems and obstacles, you will need to overcome along the way. Happily, the post below covers both, so if you are having a career crisis, keep reading to get the information, you need to make the right decision on retraining.

Benefits of retraining and changing career

Higher wages.

The first benefit that is it well worth considering when it comes to changing career is the possibility that you can earn a better salary. In fact, in many positions, the wage goes up with the amount of responsibility that rests on your shoulders. Rather than the actual amount of work you have to do.

Something that means if you change from an assistant role to one of a full professional, you may find yourself working less hard on a day to day basis. Yet still earning more by changing your career path! Of course, to become a professional, you will need to put in the training and the work. A topic you can read more about below in the other section.

More fulfilling work.

Next, when it comes to changing careers, many people are driven for a need for more fulfilling and meaningful work. In fact, it is often the case that after training and working for a time in one sector, their career hasn’t lived up to expectations. Thus retraining and changing their career could help them to find something much better suited to who and where in their life they are right now.

In fact, before choosing a second career, it can be beneficial to take a personality test and then use the information contained within to help narrow down your search. After all, if you pick a role that is best suited to your natural strengths, you are much less likely to have to work as hard to survive and succeed. Something that means you will have additional energy for other things in your life, such as family and hobbies.

Still, others, feel the call to do more for their fellow humans and do a job that makes a difference in the world. In fact, they may feel their time is better spent doing things that relieve others suffering or make a direct difference in others’ lives. Of course, we are talking mostly about the caring professions here. Although you can also include posts in charities, and the civil service as well if you have altruistic intentions at heart.

It is also wise to note here that you do not have to be 100% altruistic to go for such careers! The reason being that they are often very rewarding emotionally and economically as well.

Better work-life balance.

Many people also choose to retrain in another career because it is something that allows them to get a much better work-life balance than they are used to. In fact, there are lots of ways that choosing an alternative career can enable this.

The first is that if you pick a career path with better wages, you may actually be able to work fewer hours or shifts. Therefore you will have additional time to spend with your family, or out doing hobbies and activities you love.

Additionally, you could pick a career where you still work as many hours a week as you do now, but that offers a more flexible approach to when you work. In fact, if your new career offers flexitime, or allows you to work remotely or from home, you can have much more autonomy. Something that can really assist you in facilitating a better work-life balance.

Pitfalls of retraining and changing career

Start low down on the scale.

That is not to say, however, that there are no problems or pitfalls associated with changing career midlife. In fact, these are the very things that put many people off doing so, even though they are currently very unhappy in their jobs.

One in particular that can be hard to negotiate is that once you have retrained, it is likely you will start from the bottom once again. This being a situation that can be tough on a person both emotionally and financially.

In fact, if you are used to having a lot of autonomy in your job. That is the person that gives the orders rather than take them, suddenly being back at the bottom of the pecking order again can be a bitter pill to swallow.

Of course, it can also do you a power of good too. The reason being that there is nothing like a stint on the bottom rung to teach you how better to treat others when you do start progressing in your career. Something that can actually lead you to be much more effective in your role.

Retraining can be hard.

Next, another pitfall of changing career midlife is that training to do something else can be a real challenge. In fact, you may have been working in your current position for so long that you aren’t sure your confidence or study skills are up to the challenge.

Of course, you will be happy to discover that studying, while hard work also is not like it used to be even 10 -15 years ago. This is because tutors and teachers are much more enlightened about how to enable you to do your best. They will, in fact, be happy to provide you will support online, and can now even give you the mark schemes for your assignments. Something that means you can find out exactly what they are looking for. Therefore enabling you to spend time on the most critical parts of your subject and the skills you need to learn.

Additionally, where many people fall down with retraining is that they just don’t have enough time to fit in all the study they need to do. What with their current job and family responsibilities as well. The good news here is that you absolutely do not need to let this issue get the way of you retraining.

This is because there are how many courses like these online AGNP programs that are available. Something that means you can study online from the comfort of your own home. You don’t even have to change up the hours or shift you are currently doing. Of course, this flexibility makes retraining and pursuing an alternative career much more accessible for those that need to continue to work.

You could make the wrong choice.

The terror of making a wrong life decision is real people! In fact, it can easily keep you up at night. Sadly, when it comes to your career, it can seem like a poor choice will have a massive effect on your happiness and your quality of life. Something that can quickly put people from taking the leap and changing their career.

However, there are a few things it is wise to remember here. The first one is that you need to do your research well before you resign from your old job, and sign up for a training course is the right way to go about things. In fact, if you can volunteer or intern in a similar post.  After all, there is nothing like really being there and doing a job for getting a real feel of whether it will suit you or not.

The second is that there are no guarantees in life. In fact, you could be making the wrong decision and end up worse off than you were before. However, few things in life are truly irreversible. That means it’s quite likely you can get back into your old job if things genuinely don’t work out.

Of course, you can be heartened by the fact that there is no guarantee that your new career won’t work out either. Therefore you could be making the best decision of your life. In fact, even if everything doesn’t go your way, you are likely pretty unhappy now if you are considering changing your career. That means if you do decide to retrain at the very worst, you could end up with an exciting experience and a better perspective on the career you already have.

Conclusion

In conclusion, a midlife career crisis needn’t be a disaster, even if you have family responsibilities to maintain. In fact, as long as you are realistic about your goals, and give yourself enough time to reach them, you can change your career successful. A situation that can help you to spend your time doing something much more rewarding both emotionally, and economically!
