Motorcycles: Pros and Cons

September 8, 2019 by Pam Maynard

A motorcycle is a vehicle that has been around since 1867 when the first steam-powered option was released. These days, most people use a motorcycle as an addition to their primary vehicle. In some areas of the country, this is a vehicle that can suffice as a primary form of transportation. Some people don’t feel this is a safe way to travel, but others live their lives dedicated to the culture of motorcycles. If you’re thinking about getting one, here are a few pros and cons you should think about first.

Motorcycles: Pros and Cons

Pros

A motorcycle can be a very fun vehicle to ride on. It’s small and compact, so you can easily store it in a garage or park it in a carport. Because of its size, it’s also pretty simple to maintain. If you’re someone who is handy and can work on cars, you should have no problem performing routine maintenance and basic repairs on your own motorcycle. There is a whole culture of people that ride motorcycles who join together in a brotherhood of sorts. You’ll often see people on motorcycles wave to one another on the road, whether they know each other or not. You may even be able to find a group in your area where people get together periodically with their motorcycles to ride or have a gathering.

Motorcycles: Pros and Cons

Cons

If you live in an area of the United States where there is snow or a lot of rain, a motorcycle isn’t likely going to be your primary vehicle. You can still have one but expect to keep it in your garage for part of the year. It’s just not safe to be on a two-wheeled vehicle when the roads are slick, and visibility is low. Even properly fitted and worn, helmets can’t prevent all injuries. You will have to get insurance for your motorcycle, insurance expenses may differ, but insurance costs will rise because of the safety hazards associated with motorcycles. There are a lot of accidents involving people on motorcycles each year, with many deaths occurring. Riding a motorcycle puts you at a higher risk of getting hit by a car. People in larger vehicles tend to not spot motorcycles on the road.

As with any vehicle, it’s a good idea to take your time thinking about the pros and cons of a certain model before you make a final purchase. If this is a vehicle that you will be using in addition to what you already have, then you have plenty of time to shop around and consider your options.
