6 Practical Tips Guaranteed to Save You Money on Electricity

August 28, 2019 by Pam Maynard

Electricity is usually the biggest expense in every house. Our entire lifestyle is based on electricity. It’s been around before we were born, so we don’t know a world without it. That’s probably why we don’t value electricity and unintentionally waste a lot of it. It is a necessity and should be used like it. Despite all advancements, electricity is still very expensive. Here I have shared some practical tips to save energy and money from it.

6 Practical Tips Guaranteed to Save You Money on Electricity

A Habit Worth Following

As we have not seen life without electricity, we don’t know how valuable it is. The electricity we use in our houses is artificially generated with the help of nature. It takes a lot of effort and resources to get it to your house. We should value it, if not for the world, then maybe to save on our expenses.

Just one simple habit can help you save money on electricity bills. Shut off everything when leaving the room, even the bathroom. You may have an air conditioner, fan, lights, television, lamp, or computer running. We leave the room without realizing how much electricity was wasted when we weren’t even in the room. Furthermore, you can switch suppliers if you feel that you’re currently paying too much. For example, if you live in Pennsylvania, you can get the best PA electricity rates by comparing suppliers and making the switch.

Put Your AC on Check

Air conditioning puts the biggest weight on the electricity bill of a house. We usually turn it on at full and leave it that way unless we feel cold. A great way to put your AC on check is the use of a programmable thermostat. It will turn on the AC according to the current and required temperature. An air conditioner takes more electricity when suddenly turned on at full to cool down a hot room. A thermostat can turn it on at a normal level a few minutes before you get to your house to set the temperature. Moreover, a month service will cut down the cost of bill from AC.

6 Practical Tips Guaranteed to Save You Money on Electricity

Change Your Electricity Company

If you are following all cost-cutting practices and still getting a high electricity bill, then think about changing your electricity company. There are private electricity companies like Electricity Monster that charge you less than even public companies. You can get a deal according to your use before you install their connection. Opt for their service if you find it more cost-effective.

Get an Energy Audit

If you can’t understand where all your electricity is spent, try getting the help of a professional for an energy audit. He will tell you precisely what is causing those big electricity bills and best solution for this problem. It will not only save you money but also give you peace of mind knowing you aren’t wasting any of your electricity and money.

Replace Old Electronics and Wires

If you have any old electronics in your house from your parents’ time, consider replacing them with newer and energy-saving items. Every new electronic device is created with the objective to save energy. If you have an old house, also think about changing entire wiring structure. You can consult with a professional first to ensure the investment will be worth the cost.

6 Practical Tips Guaranteed to Save You Money on Electricity

Get Right Insulation for Your House

Producing heat takes more energy than cooling. You need to see how you can limit the use of heaters. Inadequate insulation could be the reasons house heat is going to waste. Make sure weather stripping of all doors and windows is also perfect. The right insulation and weather stripping will keep your house warm and reduce the use of heaters.
