Keeping Your Kids Safe in a High-Traffic Location

August 18, 2019 by Pam Maynard

Keeping your kids safe is one of the most challenging yet important jobs you have as a parent. Though this job is difficult just about everywhere, it can be particularly overwhelming if you live or play near a high-traffic location. As dozens upon dozens of cars come speeding by, just one vehicle is all it takes to change the life of your child forever. To help prevent this from happening, then, here are a few tips to help keep your kids safe in a high-traffic location.

Keeping Your Kids Safe in a High-Traffic Location

Traffic Light Requests

If your area is prone to especially high levels of traffic, extra traffic lights may be necessary. If you notice certain problems in the traffic in your area, you can get in touch with your city leaders to request extra traffic lights or that the current traffic lights be re-programmed to perform more effectively. Though this request can sometimes take some time to fulfill, if you are successful, this is one of the most effective ways to help keep your children safe.

Traffic Counts

Sometimes, a lack of action on the part of your local government is due to an unawareness of the problem at hand. It’s unlikely that city leaders live exactly where you live, meaning you and your neighbors are the only ones who truly know the extent of a traffic problem. Therefore, another great way to keep your kids safe is to request a traffic count for your location. The public works department can use a traffic counter to get an accurate count of the number of vehicles that pass through your area on a daily basis. They can use this information to plan better roads, add speed bumps, and make a variety of other improvements that will help keep your children safe.

Teach the Rules

If you live in a high-traffic location, it’s vitally important that you instill basic traffic safety rules in your kids from a very early age. Rules like looking both ways before they cross the street, never running out into the street to chase a toy, and always asking for help if they feel unsafe are all great rules that can make a big difference in your child’s safety. The sooner you begin teaching these rules, the more likely they are to become second-nature for your child, meaning they’ll be more likely to follow them as they get older.

Neighborhood Watch

Another great way to collect information to help keep your children safe is to start a neighborhood watch program. There are likely individuals in your neighborhood that are home all or most of the day who can help keep an eye out for speeders on your road. As dangerous behavior is realized and reported on, this will provide more evidence for you to make a claim to your local government to help increase traffic safety. Plus, it makes a great way to get to know your neighbors.

Don’t Give Up

As overwhelming as it can be at times, it’s important that you keep pushing for improved safety in your neighborhood. The last thing you want to do is keep your kids inside all the time to try and keep them safe. Kids thrive outside, and if their only place to be outside is in a high-traffic location, then it’s important to do all that you can to change the outside conditions rather than limiting them to indoor activities. It’s a big goal, but it’s one worth fighting for.
