How to Plan a Last Minute Summer Road Trip for the Family

July 27, 2019 by Pam Maynard

If you find yourself with a few extra days over the summer, you might consider taking a road trip with the family. Road trips are best when carefully planned, but you can still enjoy a spur-of-the-moment journey if you take care of a few basics. Here are a few necessities that will make your last-minute trip a success.

How to Plan a Last Minute Summer Road Trip for the Fam

Choose An Exciting Destination

Choosing your destination will be determined by how long you plan to be away. Whatever your schedule, make sure the destination has attractions that every age group will enjoy. Amusement parks are fun for kids, but parents may enjoy a more relaxed day on the beach or under the trees.

Make Your Reservations in Advance

Never hit the road leaving where you’re stay at night in question. The internet will allow you to make reservations as you follow your route and at your destination. You can avoid excessive fatigue and frustration by ensuring lodgings along your route and at your destination.

Get Your Vehicle Checked

Take your vehicle to an auto services shop for a quick inspection and to take care of minor repairs that could affect your trip. Have your repair person change the oil and air filter, check fluid levels, ensure proper tire inflation, check the battery charge and ensure all lights and signals are functioning properly. Also, check your tires. If your tread seems worn, consider getting new tires, which will make sure your vehicle grips the road firmly under all weather conditions.

Pack Appropriate Clothing for Your Activities

Consider what activities you and your family will be enjoying as you pack your clothing. Bring bathing suits and cover-ups for beach time, jackets for cool evenings and sturdy shoes for hiking through national or state parks. Sunglasses, hats and sunscreen for all are a must for every summer trip. If someone in your family takes medication on a regular basis, have plenty on hand for your journey.

Plan for Your On-the-Road Needs

The internet or your cellphone makes it easy to find family-friendly restaurants or rest stops along your route. You should also pack a cooler with plenty of water, snacks, sandwiches and other food items to keep kids and adults satisfied as you drive. Many people place a small mattress in the back seat on the floor of the back of the SUV or minivan to allow kids to nap, play games or watch videos comfortably. Bring along games, music and other toys to keep kids occupied.

A road trip can be one of the most enjoyable and memorable ways to spend time with your family. A bit of planning will ensure that you have the comforts on hand during your journey and will be ready to take advantage of the fun at your destination.
