4 Tips for Helping Your Kids Adjust to a New City after a Move

July 23, 2019 by Pam Maynard

There may come a time when a family has to change houses. A move can place a burden on any children in the family. The only life they knew will be turned upside down. Luckily, children are understanding and a good parent will listen and help their child throughout the entire process. This article contains 4 tips to help your children adjust to their new life.

4 Tips for Helping Your Kids Adjust to a New City after a Move

Show Compassion to Your Child

A child who knows that are not alone will feel better about the ordeal. Help the child understand that you are going through this change right along with them. As the adult, you will go above and beyond in showing them how to make new friends and discovering new places. However, make sure to give the child a chance to share their thoughts about the situation. Being a good listener is an essential quality of any parent trying to help a child during this tough time in their life.

Take a Tour of the New Area

There is nothing like getting outside and exploring. A child might feel scared in an unknown area, but if you take the time to explore they will likely see the positive side. Show them all the new places they can go and acclimate your child by trying out a new restaurant or perhaps buying something new. If a child develops a connection with the area, they are more likely to have a better adjustment period.

New School, New Friends

This might be the hardest part for a child to deal with. They will have to start building connections from scratch. As a parent, you can help nudge your child to become friends with kids by befriending fellow parents. If they see you getting along with new people, then the child will be more likely to stick out their hand.

Stay in Contact

There is nothing wrong with remaining in contact with those from your favorite home. Let your child know that those friendships will last forever, and by remaining in contact they will get to see them someday. Knowing they still have these connections will give the child comfort.

Moving boxes might be the classic aspect of any moving period, but the needs of a child are much more important. A parent should work closely to comfort them, explore, make new friends, and stay in touch with their old home. It could easily become a positive experience for them.
