Puppy Proofing Your Home – Inside and Out

July 21, 2019 by Pam Maynard

Are you about to be the proud owner of a new puppy? Bringing a new pet into the home will bring a lot of joy to your household. But having a puppy comes with a lot of responsibilities. Puppies by nature tend to be very curious. This curiosity can sometimes get them into trouble. As a new pet owner, it is a good idea to puppy proof your home inside and out before bringing home your new furry friend. Today, we are going to learn just how to do that. So stay tuned!

Puppy Proofing Your Home From the Inside and Out

Keep The Trash Can Out of Reach

As we have learned above, puppies are very curious. As they are roaming around the home, a trash can can be a very tempting object. With all the new smells that come from trash cans, puppies can’t resist diving in head first. While this may seem messy but harmless, trash cans can be very dangerous. Your new puppy may eat something that is toxic or swallow something that can get lodged in their throats.

Beware of Poisonous House Plants

House plants help clean the air in the home and they are very beautiful. But some of them could be deadly to dogs. Before bringing a new puppy into your home, make sure you check all of your house plants to make sure they are not dangerous to dogs. Some plants that can harm or kill your best friend include American Yew, Castor Bean Plant, and Sago Palm. Any plants that are deemed dangerous should be removed from the home.

Put Your Medications In A Lock Box

Human medication can be very harmful to your dog. It can make them sick or even kill them. To be safe, make sure that you lock any medications you have in a box. This will keep it safe and out of the reach of your pet. Lock boxes are highly affordable and well worth the money.

Install A Wireless Electric Dog Fence

Your puppy is going to need some play time outside. While you should be with them when they are outside, it only takes a minute for them to get in the street. A wireless electric dog fence will help protect your dog without spending an arm and a leg on fence. This will help set boundaries for your dog and he or she will learn their limits. To learn more about wireless electric dog fences, you should do your homework and check out some online reviews. The Pampered Pup offers reviews on many different types of dog products including electric fences. So make sure to check out many online reviews before going shopping for a fence for your puppy.

Keep The Grass Mowed

If you are going to let your dog roam around in the backyard, keep your grass mowed. This will help deter pests such as ticks and fleas. You can find the best flea treatments for dogs at pestpolicy. In addition to keeping pests at bay, a nicely mowed lawn will keep out snakes which can be venomous. Each year hundreds of dogs are bitten by venomous snakes around the country. So it is better to play it safe and keep your grass cut low.

Now that you know how to puppy proof your home, why not get started today? Remember to always make sure the trash is out of reach and remove any plants that may be dangerous for dogs. Once you have your home ready, you can bring your new pet home and really enjoy him or her to the fullest. This will allow you to relax and not worry about what your new pet is doing while you are not looking.
