A Mom’s Guide on the Most Effective Ways of Blocking Outside Noise

July 15, 2019 by Pam Maynard

Noise is a disturbing sound that comes from any source. Those living adjacent to busy streets or living with a partner who snores can explain understand the frustrating experience and noise disturbance. Noise can harm your health. Regardless of the origin of the noise, either outside or within, there are many ways to reduce or completely block out such noises.

A Mom's Guide on the Most Effective Ways of Blocking Outside Noise

Acoustic tile installation

Acoustic tiles are mostly found in theaters and recording studios because they absorb and diffuse sound. This is a technology you can apply in your home to block out noise. These tiles are readily available and come in various colors and shapes which if adequately installed, acts as wall decor. Whether you are a homeowner or renter, you can use acoustic tiles as the installation can be temporary or permanent. All you need is to place these tiles on the walls where the noise originates, and you are done.

Soundproof the windows

If the origin of the noises is from outside, the best way to put off such noises is to ensure the windows are insulated. This will help as long as the windows are closed but using soundproof curtains ensure that noise is blocked out even with the windows open. These curtains serve the purpose many purposes more than just sound insulation, they give the room a decorative look as well as inside privacy.

Floor insulation

If too much noise is from below, the way to block out is to insulate the floor. This can be done by thickening the layer that separates the noise and floor. If you are a renter, you can do this laying thick carpet or rugs. If you are the homeowner and want to get rid of noises from below, make sure you double up floor insulation through hardwood floor insulation as well as laying down thick area rugs.

Bedroom re-location

If the noise disturbs your night’s sleep while in your bedroom, consider changing your bedroom location in your home, the noise you receive at night might be amplified due to the situation of your bedroom in your house. If the bedroom is adjacent to a busy street or room with a child who screams, switching rooms can be a great idea to help reduce the noise you receive at night. Switching rooms can only be an option if you have another room to move to, if that is not the case, try new rooms and check if you can get enough sound sleep.

House re-arranging

Times, local arrangement within your house helps a lot block out some noises. In a real sense, what you are trying to do is to have large or thick objects separating you from the noise source. For instance, placing a solid bookshelf on the wall that separates you from a noisy neighbor help muffle the noise. This is a simple way of playing with your furniture but brings about significant effects on noise reduction.

There are lots of ways of which as a mother can try to ensure that the house receives the minimum noise as possible. The points mentioned above might seem small, but implementing them significantly block out noise in your room.
