4 Natural Disasters to Prepare Your Family For

June 16, 2019 by Pam Maynard

No woman is fiercer than Mother Nature. When she strikes, it can be quick, brutal, and unexpected. That’s why you need to plan for the unexpected. Your job is to protect your family including from natural disasters. Here are 4 natural disasters to prepare your family for.

4 Natural Disasters to Prepare Your Family For

Flood

Water can absolutely ruin a home. Plan ahead by not buying a house near large bodies of water. Of course, rain and plumbing issues can still cause a flood. Be prepared by getting flood insurance. You should also go over what to do if you do experience a flood with everyone in your family. If there is a flood that you won’t be able to protect your home from, have an evacuation plan ready.

Tornado

Particularly a problem in the Midwest, tornados develop when winds reach extreme speeds. A tornado can rip your home right out of your house. It can also tear up the foundation and concrete. Be prepared by having a basement or somewhere safe to go if there is a tornado. You should also have supplies down in the basement just in case you are stuck down there for a long time. This should include water and canned food. Have tools ready for soil stabilization, too, to help take care of the damage to your yard.

Fire

A fire can not only destroy your home and all the memories in it, but it can also hurt the people you love. Prepare by using fire-resistant building materials and fabric when possible. You should also have plenty of smoke detectors in your home. Make sure there are accessible exits and your family knows how to leave in the case of an emergency.

Blizzard

Many of us are used to heavy amounts of snow. However, it can be quite damaging when it gets to extreme levels. Make sure you and everyone in your household has warm outerwear that fits. You also want to make sure that there is a kit in every car complete with blankets, hand warmers, food, and water. Your home should be prepared, too. Make sure your home is insulated properly, including the pipes. This will keep everyone inside as warm as possible. It will also prevent your pipes from freezing and causing a very serious problem.

Natural disasters happen all the time. A disaster can easily affect you, your family, and your home. You can minimize the damage by being as prepared as possible. When you’re prepared for these four disasters, you are ready for just about anything that can come your way.
