How to Upkeep Your Homestead as a Family

May 20, 2019 by Pam Maynard

You recently purchased a sizeable ranch with a farmhouse and a number of additional buildings on the property for storage purposes. This is the new location of your home and agricultural-based business that will be owned and operated by you and your family. You have a lot of big plans in store for this place, and your family is going to have to do their part to make this venture work. The following are four ways your family can help you to upkeep the homestead and turn this dream into a viable operation.

How to Upkeep the Homestead as a Family

The Paperwork

As with any homestead, there is going to be paperwork that must be kept up on a regular basis. Someone, likely you and your spouse, will have to concern yourselves with the mortgage, monthly bills, ordering supplies, equipment maintenance schedules, homeowners insurance, receipts, filing taxes, and any other documents and bookkeeping methods that go with taking control of such a large property for personal or incorporated purposes.

The Daily Chores

When you purchase a large property, this can lead to a lot of daily chores that you cannot allow you or your family to neglect. Everyone has to pull their weight and get their hands dirty. For some this will involve picking produce, canning, cooking and cleaning around the house. Other family members will have to take their turn in the field planting and harvesting crops. Someone else will need to take care of the livestock by feeding the animals and cleaning out their enclosures. Another family member will have to be responsible for chopping, hauling and stacking wood for the winter months. Many of these chores are traditionally done before and after school, depending on what the chore happens to be. So, homework might have to wait for some of your family members, because there is work that needs to be done

Maintenance Issues

When you live on a large homestead, there is inevitably going to be maintenance issues that come up from time to time. You and your family might have to pitch in together to re-fence the property by replacing rotted posts, beams, rusted out barbed wire or service the electric fencing. Someone with the knowledge in your family will have to make sure the tractor is properly maintained and fixed when necessary. Additionally, replacing a roof or carrying out repairs on the various structures on your property may be a big project requiring the combined efforts of everyone in your family to get the job done in a timely fashion.

Expanding Your Interests

One of the reasons of buying a large homestead is to actually use the property for various purposes. You may want to dig out a pond and stock it with a diverse fish population. You may want to build a new barn to store more equipment. You may want to add a garage on to the side of your house where you keep the truck that you use to move produce to market. You might even want to plant fruit trees on the back 40-acres. All this can be done with the help of your family, and it can be highly rewarding and profitable too.

It has been another productive day on the homestead. You are sitting on the back porch with a glass of fresh ice tea in your hand. You are thankful for the hard work you and your family have put in to making this operation a success. You can hear the frogs and crickets chattering in the distance, and the pride you have for what has been accomplished reminds you that it has been worth all the effort you and your family have put into making it work.
