A Beginner’s Guide for an Australian Wildlife Holiday

April 22, 2019 by Pam Maynard

You must visit Australia for a one of a kind holiday experience. Where else would you get to see the beaches both pristine and endless, the vast expanse of wild nature and the largest coral reef?  If you are a first-time visitor, you must be thinking about the Kangaroo or the Koala. But the reality is Australia is abundant with wildlife; from the creepy crawlies to the cute furry ones as well.

The following section of the article is a guide on the wildlife that you can experience in Australia while on your holidays. So, without further ado, let us have a look at the good, bad and the ugly of the Australian wildlife.

A Beginner's Guide for an Australian Wildlife Holiday

Koala

Who doesn’t love a Koala? Koala is a marsupial but not related to bears. Though, the common misconception labels Koala as a bear. Koalas are nocturnal, so it isn’t fascinating to see one in the wild. Chances are the animal will remain perched on top of a Eucalyptus tree and all you will get to see in a fluffy grey ball. However, all you need to do is visit a wildlife sanctuary where you can experience Koalas up close and personal. A word of warning though, koalas might look docile, but they have incredibly sharp claws for tree climbing, which can inflict severe damage to the human skin.

Kangaroo

Another fan favorite for visitors to Australia is the Kangaroo. The sight of a Kangaroo in the wild is the quintessential Aussie showstopper. Head to an Australian outback, and you will surely see them by the scores. Take care while driving through the Aussie outback tours, since Kangaroos are known to jump in front of moving vehicles, often endangering themselves and your car. You can even try Kangaroo meat at many favorite eateries across the country.

Sugar Glider

The sugar glider is a very tiny marsupial and one of the cutest animals you can find in Australia. This possum is a nocturnal animal, and they have huge eyes. It is quite impossible to find one in the wild, but you can surely get your fill at the wildlife sanctuaries all around the country. These fruit eaters glide from tree to tree in search of food.

The Wombat

The wombat is a stocky and waddling animal and is very popular among the kids. It is similar to a Sloth or a Warthog. Like many of the Australian animals, the wombat is also nocturnal, and you can make sure of the presence of one by the distinctive and typical square droppings.

Great White Shark

Well, not everything is cute in Australia. You can only hope that you do not get to see one in the wild for obvious reasons. Many marine beaches in Australia are surrounded by nets to keep these deadly marine predators out and away from the human population. To get a closer look, you can go for cage diving at various Australian port cities. But keep in mind, this adventure is not for the faint-hearted.

Redback spider

This is quite a common spider from Australia, and they are devoid of jumping ability as well as hairless. There is an anti-venom available for the Redback, but do avoid getting bitten by one.

Australia is teeming with flora and fauna, and most of it is specific to this island country. This is your chance to truly experience Australian wildlife while on vacation with your friends and family.
