Everybody wants to put their mind at ease by increasing the safety of their home. We all seek that peace of mind! Especially when you are responsible for a family with kids.
Did you know that according to the FBI, in 2017, there were an estimated 1,401,840 burglaries. Burglaries of residential properties accounted for 67.2 percent of all burglary offenses. While that number has decreased over the years, it’s still a huge number and can be very scary.
In order for your home to be a restful, peaceful retreat from the chaos of the outside world, it must be a place where you feel safe and secure. There are many ways to create that feeling of safety. Some steps you can take are simple projects that you can do yourself while other safety measures may require the expertise of a professional. Here are 5 easy things you can do to keep your family safe!
#1 Get a SANSI LED Security Light!
A security light can provide comfort by providing light in places that leave your home feeling vulnerable. Adding motion sensor lighting to various exterior areas can increase home safety. Intruders are likely to run away when an outdoor light comes on as they approach your home. These lights will also keep unwanted critters out of your yard. Up here in New Hampshire, we don’t want Bears, Fox or Fischer Cats coming around and eating our birds. The motion detector lights are perfect at keeping the harmful animals away from your house. #2 Keep the entrances clear:
In conjunction with motion sensor lighting, you should also keep shrubbery around doors and windows trimmed. This will eliminate a potential hiding place for intruders. People like to grow a lot of greenery around the house, but it only makes it more appealing to burglars. If you can, remove large bushes and other bulky ornaments that can easily conceal the thief in the dead of night.
#3 Get a Security system or signage
If even you can’t afford a security system for your house, I bet you can locate some signs to use that say your home is protected by ___ company. Would be intruders are less likely to try to break into a house that is protected by a security system. If you do put up a security system, don’t try to hide the cameras. If visible, your security system will deter potential burglars and lower your risk of break-ins.
#4 Install deadbolt locks and teach kids to use them!
The key to deadbolt locks and stronger doors is in the proper installation. If the strength of your door is not up to your liking, install one of those metal plates that are formed to wrap around the edge of the door to cover both sides where the locks are placed. Your deadbolt lock needs to have a long bolt throw that protrudes into the door frame. The strike plate needs to be secured with long hardened screws that go all the way into the framing beyond the doorjamb.
Teach your children to lock doors as soon as you can. It’s a crucial habit that needs to be instilled early on. Also, if you’ve all gone to sleep and the car is in the garage, the house might appear appealing to the burglar. Leave the key in the lock on the interior side so it cannot be picked from the outside.
#5 Get a dog!
One of the simplest ways to offer a bit of protection for the home, especially the outside, is to get a dog. Not only will it offer you security, but unconditional love! Your dog can alert you if there is someone at the door or at a window. Our dogs bark when someone pulls in the driveway. Be sure to train the dog so that it knows who is a Friend and who is Not! You should also train it to bark and alert you when something is wrong outside the house.
