Interesting New Books for Your Shelves #SpringFunonMDR

February 18, 2019 by Sherryl Wilson

If you love to read or have a book lover in your life, you’re probably always on the hunt for new titles and authors to read. My shelves tend to be full more often than not, and the topics range anywhere from cook books and mysteries to reference and biographies. But if I want new books, I either have to get rid of some of the titles I currently have or buy more shelves. And I don’t have much space left for bookshelves, so that means I have to donate a few to have a home for the new ones. Let me tell you about a few titles I’m interested in, and maybe you’ll find new books for your shelves too!
Interesting New Books for Your Shelves

Books:

  • Poh Bakes: 100 great recipes for everything from appetizers to cakes, and roast beef to custards and curds. Wonderful pictures and easy to follow recipes make this a great cook book to have on hand.
  • Grit and Grace: Called “uncommon wisdom for inspiring leaders”; women from all walks of life provide quotes, advice, and stories meant to inspire leaders to dream what could come next.
  • Little Pizza Cookbook: 80 recipes for all sorts of pizza so you can master making the perfect slice.
  • So Here I Am: A collection of speeches from women on a variety of topics, all in a single collection.
  • Craving: A wonderful book about what is safe and what to avoid during pregnancy so you don’t have to wonder or worry. There are recipes meant for each trimester and how to indulge in treats without guilt.

My Thoughts:

Two of my favorite hobbies are reading and cooking. Or even reading about cooking! I love finding unique cookbooks that are from other cultures or other generations, even old family recipes that are barely legible. Not every recipe turns out to be a keeper, but it’s a great way to try new foods and even learn new skills in the kitchen.

Poh Bakes is a beautiful book with a ton of recipes for all kinds of food! She includes both sweet and savory baked dishes for readers to try at home. Some of them I haven’t even heard of, but I still found them easy to follow along, especially with the images provided. A few of the favorite baked goods were simply mix these dry ingredients with these wet ingredients and bake! Plus the chapter about “Must Knows” is a great wealth of skill knowledge to keep handy.

Another fun title we’ve been working through is the Little Pizza Cookbook. It’s like being in Italy every time we try one of the pizza recipes. They teach you how to make both the classic and mainstream pizzas to unique styles with new toppings. It’s especially fun when we use our knowledge to come up with our own creations! This is a neat pizza reference guide to keep on the shelf or give as a gift.

The last cookbook in this list deals with pregnancy, food cravings, and eating right. Craving is an easy to follow cookbook and informational guide helping moms-to-be learn about the foods that are safe and which should be avoided. You learn how to make healthy snacks to help you get over morning sickness, fuel your energy when it starts to drain, and how to beat those cravings for things like chocolate and salt. These recipes aren’t just great during pregnancy but still provide a healthy collection of recipes to use for your family.

As far as reading goes, I enjoy reading a variety of topics about all sorts of subject matter. Lately there has been a trend of books by and for female leaders from all walks of life. I find them interesting since their backgrounds can be so different. It’s also a great way to learn more about women, both historical and current, as well as different viewpoints on a collection of topics.

Whether you enjoy learning about female leaders or want to show your children that women can be in positions of power too. The pages of Grit and Grace are beautifully designed and meant to be shared. You almost want to pull them out and hang them on your wall or frame them for inspiration. This book covers 90 different women, ranging from scientists to actresses, and political figures to police chiefs! It also makes a great gift for the women in your life or a new graduate as they make their way in this world.

The other book specifically about women is So Here I Am by Anna Russell. These speeches are referred to as having changed the conversation when it comes to powerful and emotional topics, such as gender equality, race, political issues, and more. These women come from all sorts of backgrounds, cultures, and decades. While you may not agree with everything they say, I would say they do make you think about those issues in a different light. The pages also contain colorful and powerful illustrations by Camila Pinheiro.

No matter if you’re buying books for yourself or as a gift for a fellow book lover, any of these titles would make a great choice. Even if you aren’t a professional chef, you can always expand your knowledge in the kitchen to cook for your friends and family. And the titles on women leaders and their voices is a powerful and thought provoking books. You can’t go wrong with any of these options, putting new books on your shelves.
