What to Expect from Restoring your Hair- Basic Aspects of a Hair Transplant

October 6, 2018 by Pam Maynard

Hair transplantations involve procedures during which dermatological specialists or surgeons transfer hair to the bald section of the head. Surgeons typically move hair from the side or back of the head to the top or front of the head. Hair transplantation usually takes place within a medical facility under local anesthesia.

What to Expect from Restoring your Hair- Basic Aspects of a Hair Transplant

Causes of Hair Loss

Most hair loss occurs as a result of pattern baldness. This is attributed to genetics. Other cases are caused by various factors such as medication, hormonal imbalance, illness, stress and diet.

Types of Hair Transplantation

Transplant procedures include micrografts and silk grafts. Micrografts consist of one or two hairs for each graft according to the how much coverage is required. On the other hand, silk grafts consist of 4-10 for each graft.

Candidates for Hair Transplants

A hair transplant can help to improve your self-confidence and overall appearance. Even hair transplants of famous actors show that this procedure is becoming increasingly popular among big celebrities. Potential candidates for hair transplantation include:

  • A person who has lost hair as result of a scalp injury or burn
  • Women who have thinning hair
  • Men who have male pattern baldness

Hair replacement may not be a good option for the following:

  • Hair loss that is caused by procedures like chemotherapy
  • People who typically form fibrous, thick scars or keloid scars after surgery or injury
  • People who do not have sufficient donor sites to provide hair for the transplant
  • Women who have a widespread hair loss pattern on the entire scalp. Click here for hair transplant NYC.

Hair Transplant Procedure

After the scalp is thoroughly cleaned, a surgeon numbs the area of the head with local anesthesia by using a small needle. The next step is to use a scalpel for the purpose of removing a round part of the scalp that is covered with hair before sewing the scalp and closing it.

  • The surgeon proceeds to separate the portion of the scalp that has been removed into small sections by using sharp surgical knife and magnifying lens. When these sections are implanted, a natural appearance of hair growth can be achieved.
  • Tiny holes are made with a needle or blade within the area of the scalp that receives the hair transplant. The surgeon places hairs gently in the holes.
  • During a treatment session, hundreds or thousands of hairs may be transplanted by the surgeon. After grafting, bandages or gauze are used to cover the scalp for a specified period of time.
  • Hair transplant sessions can last for four hours or longer. You may require a number of sessions to achieve the desired results or full head of hair you want. Sessions take place many months apart in order for each transplant to heal fully.

Basic Aspects of a Hair Transplant

After the Transplant

You may experience a sore scalp and be advised to take medication after the procedure such as anti-inflammatory medication to deal with the swelling, antibiotics to minimize the risk of infection and pain medication.

  • Many people are able to return to work many days after the surgery.
  • Transplanted hair may fall out a few weeks following the procedure. This is a normal occurrence that paves the way for hair growth. Many people observe some new hair growth within months after the surgery.
  • Medication is also available to enhance hair growth as well as to stop or slow down future hair loss.
