Inclusion is a model I want my children to reach in every aspect of their lives. We recently added Selma’s Dolls into our daughters’ life and they have helped us open the conversation up to be better people by taking the steps to make sure all of our hearts and minds are in the right place when it comes to meeting new people. Diversity is a wonderful thing and the concept of Selma’s Dolls works to make it easier for us to introduce that.
When a child walks into a museum clutching their beloved Muslim doll it can definitely spark interest. I am always happy to hear another parent ask about her doll. Sharing that my daughters’ doll doesn’t have to look just like her is refreshing. She’s two and doesn’t necessarily know why her doll wears a hijab, but nonetheless she loves and accepts her.
About Selma’s Dolls
Selma’s Dolls formed when two moms realized a conversation needed to be started with their young children about accepting and learning from people of all different backgrounds, races, cultures and religions. The first collection of ragdolls includes a Muslim friend, Mexican-American friend and a friend with Down syndrome. Our goal is to help parents and caretakers teach little ones about differences through a doll that may, or may not, look like your child – it’s about teaching that differences are beautiful and friendships can be made regardless. Each doll comes with an illustrated storybook and conversation starters.
Ameena is a Muslim doll made with a variety of soft and snuggly materials like Jersey Knit fabric. These materials are kid-friendly, and parent-friendly (you can easily spot clean). Ameena is 12.8 inches tall and lightweight. Her arms, legs, and tush are sown together in a way that makes her fun and easy to hold and also able to sit upright by your side. Ameena wears the color green, as green has a number of traditional associations and meanings in Islam. In each doll’s clothing print, you can find a nod to the olive branch which is a universal symbol of “peace” and part of the Selma’s Dolls logo. Ameena and the rest of the Selma’s Dolls collection is designed for kids ages 2 and up
The Ameena doll also comes with the illustrated storybook, “First Day of School,” a magical story where Selma overcomes her first day of school fears through the help of her new friends (Ameena, Annie and Lola). The book also includes a letter to you (the parent/caretaker) and conversation starters, so you can feel comfortable starting the discussion around differences without feeling like you need to be an expert. We feel the book and doll will help you create sweet and special memories with your child while celebrating the beauty, diversity and uniqueness in all of us.
Meet Lola
Lola is a Mexican-American doll made with a variety of soft and snuggly materials like Jersey Knit fabric. These materials are kid-friendly, and parent-friendly (you can easily spot clean). Lola is 12.8 inches tall and lightweight. Her arms, legs, and tush are sown together in a way that makes her fun and easy to hold and also able to sit upright by your side. Lola wears a Mexican-inspired print that was created uniquely for her. In each doll’s clothing print, you can find a nod to the olive branch which is a universal symbol of “peace” and part of the Selma’s Dolls logo. Lola and the rest of the Selma’s Dolls collection is designed for kids ages 2 and up.
The Lola doll also comes with the illustrated storybook, “First Day of School,”
Meet Annie
Annie is down syndrome doll made with a variety of soft and snuggly materials like Jersey Knit fabric. These materials are kid-friendly, and parent-friendly (you can easily spot clean). Annie is 12.8 inches tall and lightweight. Her arms, legs, and tush are sown together in a way that makes her fun and easy to hold and also able to sit upright by your side. Her blue and yellow uniquely created butterfly pattern is important to Annie as it represents awareness for people with Down Syndrome. In each doll’s clothing print, you can find a nod to the olive branch which is a universal symbol of “peace” and part of the Selma’s Dolls logo. Annie and the rest of the Selma’s Dolls collection is designed for kids ages 2 and up.

My Thoughts
Selma’s Dolls are adorable and once you have one up close you start to see the story of your new ragdoll unfold. I fell in love with the attention to detail and the love of inclusion each doll represents. I am proud to share Selma’s Dolls with my daughter and encourage her to play with them in and outside our home. They are well made and have handled the wear of a toddler dragging them around daily. We can’t wait to see more Selma’s Dolls in the future and add them to our collection.
