As summer comes to a close and the school year begins, the birthday party invites start rolling in! My kids love attending parties to see their friends, enjoy some cake, and watching their friend open their birthday gifts. I don’t always get a lot of notice ahead of time, so I either have to find something that will work on a store shelf or hit my Amazon Prime app and shop. I’m definitely an Amazon kind of Mom because I can count on low prices and usually quick shipping. So to help my other fellow Moms out there, here are some fun birthday gifts under $20, all with the click of a button via your Amazon Prime app!

- Playfoam Pals – Each pod holds small squishy colorful beads which surround a surprise friend collectible! The kids can mold the foam, which doesn’t dry out like clay, while they play with their new animal critter buddy! Plus, you can even find rare golden critters to complete your collection. And don’t worry, the foam doesn’t stick or leave a residue like some other versions, the kids can swap their heads and bodies around to encourage imagination and play, and it travels easily back in the pod it came in! - Rhino Hero from HABA – No, it’s not a bird or a plane, but a flying Rhino Hero! He loves to climb and watch over the city from the tops of buildings, but that can be difficult since he’s heavy as a rhino! Kids can use the building cards to build a skyscraper that’s tall enough but also strong enough to hold Rhino Hero up safely! It’s a great game for kids 5 and up, and perfect for 2-5 players.

This is a spiral bound book that lays flat, using dry erase markers to practice tracing letters and words, then writing them on their own, before erasing it and doing it all over again! My Thoughts:
Shopping for a kid’s birthday present can present a challenge if you don’t know what characters or TV shows they are into right now. And you don’t want to get the wrong ones (trust me, I know) so it’s easier to stick with non-character related gift ideas. And they need to be available quickly and hopefully under budget of $20 (what we spend on a child’s gift on average). These five items I’ve listed cover most age ranges, and they are all offline/no screen time toys and games which is a win in my Mom book.
For the younger birthday kids, we like the SoapSox Disney Baby toys available in characters from several Disney movies and shows. These are wonderful toys that can be played with wet or dry, as they are stuffed animals that are also meant to be used in the tub as wash cloths! It’s fun to hear the child laughing as the bubbles start foaming up from their little buddy and it makes bath time so much less stressful.
I also like to gift the Highlight books like Write-On Wipe-Off Let’s Write Words books so their little fingers start getting used to writing the letters in sight words that they are already learning about. And the book includes several puzzles to complete, so it’s still fun while it’s educational. And the fact that they use dry erase markers which can be erased and the activities completed again is a hit! And there are other titles available if you need more advances or even for a younger age.
When the birthday kid runs a little older, that’s when we start gifting items like the game Rhino Hero, where the kids use cards to build a skyscraper for the superhero and it’s gotta be strong enough to hold him up in the sky without toppling over. And since each game is different, it’s like playing a new game each and every time.
Then there’s the Playfoam Pals which are a wonderful alternative to clay and dough toys which can be difficult for smaller fingers and definitely can make a mess! The squishy foam balls are perfect since they stick to themselves and can be used to create scenes and props like a beach, trees, pools, and more.
And they come with those surprise animals inside so you never know what you’ll get, maybe even a lucky golden critter! You can easily store the foam back in the pod or keep it in a plastic sandwich bag to keep it sealed.
And probably the best present we enjoy giving are the Plus-Plus building sets that are made of a single shape but can be used in so many different ways. There are several sets with different color themes that all still work together, and you can build flat things on the table or bring your creation to life with a 3D rendering. Only their imagination is the limit, and gone are the days where if you lose a piece, the whole set is ruined. And these blocks fit right back in the tube which can be tossed in a backpack, purse, or in the seat pocket for easy storage and travel.
Whether you need one gift or several gifts, I hope my suggestions for fun birthday gifts under $20 are helpful! Simply hop onto Amazon, order your products, and you’re done! No more standing in front of toy shelves to find the perfect gift for a decent price, stand in line to check out, and keep the rest of the kids out of it since it’s for a birthday party. This makes those endless back to school birthday parties a bit easier to manage.
