How to Choose the Perfect Drone for your Child

August 2, 2018 by Pam Maynard

Choosing the perfect birthday gift or Christmas present for your child can be tough. However, you can make no mistake by picking up a quadcopter or drone. A drone is your golden key to becoming the super-dad or super-mom you have always wanted to be. Choosing the first drone can be a little more than challenging since children take more time to master the controls. 10-year olds have significantly less hand-eye coordination as compared to a 14-year old. Therefore, your choice should reflect the maturity with which your child will use it.

How to Choose the Perfect Drone for your Child

You will read several blogs and hear several parents complain about how flying drones has hurt their child. The rotors are precarious, and they pose a danger to their delicate fingers unless you pick a model that is child-friendly. Contrary to popular belief, most reputable drone companies make models according to the user’s age and coordination level. Here are a few questions you can ask yourself to make the right choice –

  • How old is your kid?

Irrespective of their intelligence quotient, children below the age of 10 years have poor hand-eye coordination. That is one of the reasons. Younger children tend to tumble and bump into furniture more often. Mini drones help in honing their coordination, but at the same time, gifting them a model that is too complex can overwhelm them. The model for a 15-year old should be significantly more complicated and a little costlier than that of a younger pilot.

  • Does he or she have any previous experience flying a drone or a quadcopter?

In most cases, parents have a tough time picking a model since this is the first one they are buying for their child. If your kid does not have any experience in flying, get him or her a simpler one that does not have complicated (compound) control options.

  • How much are you willing to spend?

The first drone will never be their last since they will crash several times before learning how to control it. You can find drones that fit all budgets. From $30 to $300, there are lucrative models with varying features and control options. Picking a more straightforward, low-cost model for a child below the age of 10 is advisable since they are more likely to hone their skills on it.

  • What kind of safety features do these drones offer?

You need to check for propeller guards. Presence of these can protect the small fingers of your child. They also help to protect furniture and electronic appliances from unwarranted crashes.

  • How much does the quadcopter weigh?

Weight is an essential factor that determines its potential to cause damage. Any drone that weighs above 4 oz has the potential to cut or crush a child’s fingers. Always buy a lightweight drone that is safe for your dear one.

Today, there are so many variants that come with lucrative price tags. You do not have to worry about picking your favorite child for giving him or her the star present of the year. You can buy a quadcopter for each one of them and be the best parent of the century without burning a hole through their college funds.
