How to Keep Young Minds Active during the Summer Months

June 10, 2018 by Pam Maynard

You have to keep your kids active during the summer months so that their minds don’t stagnant. On average, kids lose two months of their reading skills over the course of summer vacation. Here are some of the ways that you can limit the amount of knowledge that your kids lose.

How to Keep Young Minds Active during the Summer Months

Make Weekly Library Visits

Even if your kids don’t like to read, they can still find a book that interests them. Many libraries also offer summer activities to help your children stay engaged. Planning a weekly visit to the library could have your resistant reader caving. Make it a fun family thing to do on a Saturday morning. The whole family could pick out a book. Another part of this is setting aside time each day to encourage reading the books that were selected.

Schedule Summer Camps

There are any number of summer programs that are available for kids. Your kid’s school will often have the information available for some summer programs for kids that they recommend. You can also enroll your kids in summer sports programs. This will enable them to get out and be more physically active. You may have only been considering ways to keep their minds engaged. They can better focus on academic activities if they can get out some of their energy.

Have a Family Game Night

A family game night gives everyone a chance to reconnect even when you’re busy. Select games that encourage your kids to practice their math skills. The math portion of their education is so often overlooked. It’s just as important to keep these skills up as their reading skills. There are games that are designed for younger children that help to develop their conceptual abilities when it comes to understanding numbers.

Some attractions like the zoo even offer play areas so that your kids can take a break from the learning portion of the excursion.
