5 Safety Features to Look for in a New Car Purchase

April 7, 2018 by Pam Maynard

While you’re shopping for a new vehicle, you’ll have a handful of priorities in mind. But arguably, the most important priority you’ll consider while shopping for a new car is how to keep yourself and your family safe.

While today’s vehicles offer plenty of safety features, you should ask your car salesperson about the following five characteristics:

5 Safety Features to Look for in a New Car Purchase

1. Impact Airbags

Even if the airbag has been disabled by the manufacturer (as is often the case), it’s crucial that your new vehicle is equipped with one. The Institute for Highway Safety has noted that at the very least, side-impact airbags are essential for keeping car passengers safe. Also, you should make sure that your airbag protects both your head and your chest from impact.

2. Anti-locking brakes

The abbreviation for anti-locking brakes is ABS. While they’re often a standard feature on new cars, it’s important for you to make sure that your prospective vehicle offers this safety feature.

They’re important because they prevent your brakes from locking up if you bear on them too hard. Imagine yourself suddenly coming to a hard stop. You’ll need your brakes to work immediately, and if they lock up, then your car will skid right into another vehicle, or smack into a damaging object.

3. Adaptive Lights

Today’s headlights are made to reduce glare, which is crucial for nighttime driving. This is a feature that’s especially important for drivers who are driving long distances at night, or during cloudy, rainy, or snowy days.

The lights are also designed to adjust to your driving habits, rendering enough targeted light according to aspects such as your current speed of driving your vehicle.

4. Rear Defrosting System

While this feature is usually standard in newer cars, you’ll still need to ensure that your vehicle is equipped with the ability to defrost the windows during cold, rainy, or foggy days.

5. Backup Cameras

Too many drivers have suffered the tragic consequences of running over people or animals because they couldn’t see them in their rearview mirrors. Backup cameras prevent tragedies by providing drivers with an extra line of view, preventing them from damaging objects or harming people and animals.

While owning and driving your new vehicle, you’ll transport all sorts of cargo. But the most important load you’ll carry in your new car is your family. Take steps to keep yourself and your family safe by making sure that your new vehicle is equipped with features designed with safety in mind.
