2 Ways to Make Reading Fun for Your Kids

October 26, 2012 by Pam Maynard

Reading is Fundamental!

No matter what the modernists say about learning reading and no matter how much radical the process of grooming kids have become, one thing that remains like an universal truth is the fact that reading is one of the most noble habits in children. But the biggest problem that you might be facing in this regard is the fact that your kids tend to lose interest in reading owing to the fact that they complain that reading is not as fun as the other activities like watching cartoons and playing around. While all this can be accepted, there is still no way you can deny the importance of the habit of reading and why your kid must be spending more time with any form of books than with the idiot box in your home. Here are 2 tips that will help you make reading fun for your kids:

1.      Ease Of Accessibility

If you ever keep a keen eye on your kid’s regular activities you will soon notice that one of the main reasons why they seem to be spending more time with the television and the gaming console is because of the fact that these are easily accessible in the drawing room of your house and they can turn it on and access it irrespective of any other factor. Now compare this situation with the fact that the books that the kids are supposed to read, may it be the story books or their school books are kept in a cupboard that is tucked away in their room which they hardly access during the day. This is one of the biggest reasons why kids tend to deviate away from the habit of reading to the habit of watching films and playing stupid video games.

You will need to ensure that your kids have their books readily available in front of them whenever they might be having some free time and thinking of wasting the same watching the television or playing console games. You can have a dedicated rack of books in the living room which will attract the kids’ attention whenever he is there.

2.      Choosing The Right Books

You will also need to ensure that these books are attractive enough to him in order to pull him away from the goodies that the console offers. This is why it is important that you identify the reading preferences of your kids and then populate the playroom or the living room with these types of books. In case you find that it is historic events and dinosaurs that catch the fancy of your kids you will need to ensure that there are enough illustrated books available in the area of the book rack from where he can readily access an interesting looking dinosaur related book.

Keeping these 2 aspects of making reading fun for your children will have immense beneficial effects on them when it comes to learn to read and you can rest assured that they will not be spending the valuable time doing useless things in the house.
