How to Keep Your Personal Belongings Safe While Upgrading Your Home

February 28, 2018 by Pam Maynard

Having a beautiful, updated home is an integral part of what makes it enjoyable to be there in the first place. Sometimes, these upgrades require disruption to your standard way of life, which is entirely acceptable so long as it culminates in beautiful results. At the same time, you want to ensure that all your belongings remain safe for the duration of the process. Here are a few simple ways you can do that without interrupting the progress of the rest of the project.

upgrade your home

Cover it Up

Depending on the size and scope of your projects, you may be able to leave all your belongings in the room that is being updated. While that is undoubtedly the most convenient option, you still want to ensure that contaminants from the project don’t end up on your belongings. That’s why it’s so important to cover up your belongings for the duration of the project.

To achieve the best results, make sure to carefully seal off each significant item in the room since common contaminants including dust have a way of finding their way into even the smallest area that’s left uncovered. In addition to having a cover over the top, make sure it extends all the way to the floor, so that dust can’t float in and attach to anything. Also noteworthy is making sure that if you’re painting, that you use a waterproof covering for all covered items, as merely using a blanket could allow the paint to soak through and damage the things underneath.

Move It

If the scope of the project is broad enough that nothing can remain in the room, then moving those pieces out may be your only option. If the room you’re emptying doesn’t have much stuff in it, or you have a large enough house to absorb the items into the other places, go ahead and move it elsewhere. That way, you will still have easy access to frequently-used things, while still keeping them protected from the construction area. Just be sure to protect all doors, corners, and stairs as you move items around so you won’t end up with more repair projects to complete after completing the main project.

storage units

Store It

If there’s just too much stuff in the room or area that’s being renovated, or the rest of your house isn’t large enough to absorb any extra thing, then it’s probably time to move some items into storage. A secure storage unit will ensure whatever your store there stays safe, dry, and still easily-accessible in an emergency. With the extra things in storage, you can continue life as usual in the rest of your home, knowing that the items you removed from the area that’s being renovated will be ready for you the moment you need them. While your things are in storage, it’s a good idea to cover them to protect against dust accumulation and keep smaller items in storage boxes to prevent them from being lost as you move them in and out of your storage unit.

Enjoy!

While the renovation process can be hectic, do your best to enjoy the process, especially knowing that the outcome will be worth it. Stay patient with the workers and your family members, as interruptions in normal life resulting from house updates can often be stressful. Just know that there is a finish line, and when it’s done, you’ll get to enjoy your home in an entirely new way.
