Walk-a-Thon Diaries: Lessons from a 3rd Grade Teacher

August 20, 2025 by Pam Maynard

Let me start with this: I love my students. I also love snacks. So when our school announced a walk-a-thon fundraiser, I thought, Perfect! A wholesome day of movement and fresh air. A few laps. Maybe a snack break in the shade. How hard could it be?

Spoiler: harder than it looked.

7:45 AM: Questionable Footwear and Naive Optimism

The day started like any normal school day, except 27 third graders wore matching t-shirts, and buzzed with enough energy to power a small city .

One brought a megaphone. Another had glitter in her hair and a full hydration backpack. A third brought his grandmother’s chihuahua… in a tutu.

I brought Advil, lukewarm coffee, and shoes I immediately regretted.

9:00 AM: Laps, Chants, and Flashbacks

We hit the field with enthusiasm. Music blasted. Parents waved signs. Some teachers actually jogged (traitors). I jogged too, for a while (like I hadn’t just graded 32 book reports the night before). By Lap 12, I was winded. By Lap 17, I traded my lunch for a Capri Sun. Somehow, the chihuahua still had more energy than I did.

And then something shifted!

One of my shyest students picked up the megaphone and started leading chants. Another one stopped mid-lap to walk with a classmate who wanted to quit. Parents clapped. Grandparents cheered. And somehow… SOMEHOW, it all felt amazing!

That’s when I realized: this walk-a-thon actually works.

And not just for fundraising.

So… How Did We Pull It Off?

Simple: PledgeStar.

I’ve seen enough chaotic fundraisers to know how bad they can get. Lost pledge sheets. Forgotten checks. Last-minute panic. (Mostly mine.)

But this time? Smooth as a fresh glue stick on craft day.

And here’s exactly what PledgeStar did for us:

1. Personalized Donation Pages

Every student had their own donation page, easy to set up, fun to personalize, and simple to share.

Parents shared links by text, email, and even social media. Within days, donations rolled in from aunts, uncles, grandparents, and even from a former babysitter who moved to Alaska.

2. No Envelopes. No Math. No Meltdowns.

Normally, I’m stuck sorting forms, counting pledges, and chasing checks. Not this time. Not with PledgeStar.

Donors gave directly online, and PledgeStar tracked everything: amounts, messages, and distance goals. I didn’t touch a calculator once. I spent that time clapping, taking photos, and (let’s be honest) trying to keep up.

3. Keep More of What You Raise

Let’s talk money.

Some fundraising platforms take a big chunk out of donations. Well, not PledgeStar.

No upfront fees and schools can keep up to 95% of what they raise. When the PTA treasurer shared our final numbers, jaws dropped. Our goal wasn’t just met! It was crushed like a juice box at recess.

Naturally, more funds meant more classroom supplies, better field trips… And finally, replacing the classroom globe that still shows the USSR.

The Finish Line

By the end of the day, my legs felt like boiled noodles, my voice disappeared somewhere around Lap 22, and my once-white sneakers had adopted the texture of the sidewalk.

But it was worth it. We raised thousands of dollars. No cookie dough, wrapping paper, or car washes involved.

Would I do it again?

Absolutely.

But next time, I’m bringing proper shoes. And yes. Another donation page powered by PledgeStar.

Final Thoughts

If you’re a teacher, PTA member, or even just a parent who once accidentally volunteered for “just one event,” here’s my advice:

  • Use PledgeStar. It saves time, energy, and sanity.
  • Let kids personalize their pages. They’ll be proud, motivated, and weirdly competitive.
  • Share far and wide. You never know who’ll donate.
  • Stay hydrated
  • Laugh through the chaos. There will be chaos. It’s worth it.

At the end of the day, walk-a-thons aren’t just fundraisers. They bring students, families, and teachers into one big, slightly sweaty, very loud, totally worthwhile cause.

So here’s to fundraising that actually works. And to PledgeStar, for helping us raise more, stress less, and survive one more walk-a-thon.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I have a chihuahua to return.
