Protecting Your Hearing in Noisy Environments

January 8, 2025 by Pam Maynard

How to Take Care of Your Hearing in Noisy Environments

Exposure to loud noise, especially over extended periods, can cause permanent hearing loss. This is particularly relevant in places where many people are exposed to high noise levels, such as concerts, clubs, bars and other venues. Protecting your hearing should be a priority, as damage is irreversible. This article provides tips on safe listening and protecting your hearing health.

ear plugs

Use Earplugs at Loud Events

Earplugs are an easy and affordable way to protect your ears from excessive noise. Look for earplugs with a noise reduction rating (NRR) of at least 20 decibels. These block enough sound to significantly reduce the risk of damage without muffling everything. Bring a pair to concerts, clubs, bars, sporting events or any place with amplified music. Wear them consistently during loud portions. You’ll still hear the music while preventing lasting damage. Foam or silicone earplugs designed to reduce noise are best. Avoid wax earplugs intended for sleeping, as they may not adequately protect your hearing.

Give Your Ears Breaks

Even with earplugs, avoid constant exposure to extreme noise levels. Take regular breaks by moving to a quieter area when possible. Try to avoid standing directly in front of speakers. Take a breather outside or in a lobby area every so often. Not only do your ears need respite, but short breaks can enhance your enjoyment by giving you renewed energy.

Turn Down the Volume on Personal Devices

Listening to music through earbuds or headphones at high volumes can also lead to noise-induced hearing loss over time. Listen at no more than 60% of your device’s maximum volume through headphones. Try apps that monitor volume to ensure safe listening levels. Also, limit headphone usage to shorter periods.

Get Annual Hearing Checkups

Routine hearing tests can detect early signs of hearing loss. An audiologist can check for issues and advise on precautions. Understanding the cost of hearing aids ahead of time can also help you plan financially and make informed treatment decisions. Early intervention is key, as technologies like hearing aids are most effective when hearing loss is minor.

What to Expect When Having a Hearing Test

A hearing test carried out at a clinic like Hear Clear NI, also known as an audiometry exam, checks your ability to hear different sounds at various volumes and frequencies. During the test, you will sit in a soundproof booth wearing headphones. The audiologist will play a series of tones through the headphones and ask you to signal when you hear them. Tones will range from low to high frequencies at different decibels to test the full spectrum of your hearing.

The audiologist may also test each ear separately to compare your hearing between them. The results determine your hearing levels, allowing the audiologist to identify any potential hearing loss or other issues. The test is quick, painless, and non-invasive.

Hearing damage from noise exposure is preventable with smart habits. Protect yourself by consistently wearing earplugs when necessary, avoiding overexposure, turning down personal devices and getting regular checkups. Prioritizing safe listening levels now allows you to continue enjoying music, events, and activities you love for years to come. Be proactive about reducing risk, as your hearing health is precious.
