Home Drain Cleaning & Repair Services – What Do They Do?

March 1, 2024 by Pam Maynard

While a home uses a tremendous amount of water during a given day for a living, all of that liquid has to go somewhere. If not consumed, it goes down the drain when it is no longer needed. Every home is built with a network of smaller drain pipes that connect to bigger ones and use gravity to move waste water out of a home and to a municipal sewer or leach field system. Operating clear drain systems works extremely well. However, when there’s an obstruction, it can be amazing how fast water backs up and becomes a problem inside the home. Worse, if the drain pipe is cracked, penetrated or broken, that can create leakage at that location of the pipe, creating surrounding damage too. Both need professional drain cleaning and repair services to be corrected properly.

Water Can Damage a Lot Quickly

The biggest problem with water involves how easy it is for the liquid to penetrate different materials and cause damage. Not only does water spread everywhere it can with gravity, but the moisture also triggers secondary damage over time with mold and mildew. So, a drain repair that is leaking becomes a real issue for a home, especially if the drain is behind the walls or in the foundation.

Drain Repair to the Rescue

Ideally, where a drain pipe can be cleared and flowing properly again, that’s a big win. Professional drain repair services can achieve this through various tools when it comes to removing minor to medium-level obstructions. In some cases, even serious blockages can be broken if the routing took can break it down to smaller pieces. However, where lodged, the section of the drain pipe blocked may have to be removed and cleared as well as re-installed or replaced.

In the case of a cracked, penetrated pipe, it may be restorable with a new internal lining. In these situations, the old pipe is expanded out while a new sheath is installed in the process. It essentially creates a new pipe inside the old one. This trenchless approach has saved a number of drain systems in homes that otherwise might result in serious digging. However, in the case of a complete break and dislocation or a serious root penetration, full removal and replacement may be necessary.

Other Issues Addressed with Drain Repair

Drain treatment isn’t just about removing blockages, even though those situations tend to make up a good amount of the work. Drain repair can also be very useful in terms of maintenance. Regular cleaning avoids more expensive problems in the first place, clearing out residue that can contribute to a blockage over time.

Maintenance tends to improve flow speed, identifies weak points or problems before they become a big issue, and removes smaller obstacles that will cause backups eventually. Maintenance also provides a regular inspection from a professional, which can catch issues the homeowner may overlook in passing.

Regional Concerns Can Contribute to Issues

San Diego is a mix of new and older neighborhoods. They all end up sharing the same sewer system that affects home drains. Using a local professional can make short work of a problem, especially if it’s one that has been causing concerns with multiple homes in the area. Having that kind of knowledge can help with responsibility for a drain problem, especially when the concern is being caused later in the line outside the home and where the city is responsible.

While there are tools available at local big box hardware stores, they tend to be basic level and can result in a lot of damage if someone doesn’t know how to use them properly. While a basic snake tool, usually available for retail, can help with minor blockages, anything involving a motorized router should be handled by a professional for safety and to protect your drain lines from damage. Professional plumbers make a big difference, and no one wants a do-it-yourself job to turn into a big drain cleaning and replacement project if it can be avoided.
