Things To Consider Before You Move House

December 18, 2023 by Pam Maynard

One thing you try not to do very many times in your life is to move house. It can be one of the most stressful transitions that go through your life, having to pack up a whole home, move location and unpack it all again. The reason why moving house can be so stressful is because not only are you having to pack up your whole house there are so many other things you have to do before and after moving.

There is a reason why some people don’t move very often, or will only move once because of how stressful it is. Despite being stressful, moving house can be a good thing. There are different reasons why you may want to move house and there are things that you can do to try and make it a little bit less stressful. It’s all about being prepared and organized to move house.

Here are some things to consider before, during, and after you move house.

Firstly, You Want To Consider The Location

When moving house, one of the main things you want to think about is where you want to move to. You have a whole world out there, and you may want to consider moving to a house within the same area because you don’t want to disrupt your children’s schooling, or you may want to move to a different city or town for a new start, you may want to move to the countryside and get away from city life or you simply might want to move around the world.

Waterfront property

There are so many things to consider about what you want around your home, and also you have to think long-term as you don’t move very often in life, it’s always best to think about what’s gonna be happening in the next 5 to 10 years. So, one of the things that you can consider is buying a waterfront home. Waterfront properties are unknown for their wonderful views, whether it’s a small log cabin or bungalow that sits along beautiful lakes and rivers, with amazing views of nature where you can simply walk out the front of your home and go fishing and sit in admire the view.

Live Beachfront

You could also get a beachfront property. This is where your property sits alongside the beach and you could go out for a morning run along the beach and simply go back home. If you haven’t lived near water or have to travel a long way to get to your closest beach. It’s such a nice way of living. It’s great for those who play watersports, it gives you holiday vibes in your everyday life and it’s a great long-term investment.

City or Country?

If you aren’t looking for water and property, then one of the bigger questions is if you want to live in the city or the countryside. Living in the city has a lot of benefits as it is close to a lot of things. It means you’re close to hospitals and shops and everything is a lot more convenient.

However, it can be a busy place to live. You may struggle to park your car and then maybe things like pollution from excess cars. The countryside is a wonderful place to live. If you don’t like city life, it’s a lot quieter, closer to nature, And has a greater sense of community in the villages and countryside locations.

However, you may have to travel quite a way to go to certain shops and you may not have a hospital near you. If there are emergencies, you need to be aware that you may have to travel along the way or wait longer for an ambulance.

How It Will Affect Your Family

When moving house, you need to consider not only how it will affect you but also your family. If you live close to a lot of your family and you want to move away, we need to consider how that may affect your relationships with them as you simply won’t see them as often. You can plan and console them by explaining that you still see them as much and you can. You can travel to each other for long weekends and spend quality time together.

If your children are school-age, they will feel quite settled in the school environment and have friends and it can be very daunting to them to move house and have to start fresh. It can cause a lot of anxiety in children as they will be moving to a new school and having to meet all new friends and get out of their comfort zone.

Things To Consider When You Are Looking To Move House

If you are planning to move house and you feel that your children may be affected by it then it is important to keep them part of the decisions and conversations so they’re aware of what could be happening. You could also take them to the new city or town that you’re considering moving to and show them around. Show them the new house and what their bedroom will be to make them more excited. Then, show them around the school that they would be moving to to help them settle in a bit better.

Planning The Move With Ease

When you’ve got your property and you have signed contracts, you’re getting ready to move in; then, the real planning can begin. You want to start packing up early as you don’t want to rush at all last minute and throw things into random boxes. Try to color your boxes or have color-coded labels for each room so it’s easy to see where they’re going to go.

If you want to take a lot of the stress out of moving house, you can hire professional movers. Professional moving companies will take a lot of the stress out of it as they will do most of it for you and make the whole thing easier and less stressful.

You also want to Declutter and get rid of any belongings you no longer want as there’s no point moving things to a new house if you simply don’t want them anymore. It’s just wasted time and effort.

Things To Do After You’ve Moved House

When you’ve moved house, and you’re sat in your home with all your boxes surrounding you, it can feel overwhelming. The amount of stuff you have to unpack and find a place for in your new home can be stressful, but you just need to take it one step at a time.

One of the best things to do when you move house is to make sure you have money set aside to order takeaway the day you move in. You don’t want to be searching around the house for the pots, pans, and plates to make a meal from scratch after such a stressful day moving. Try out one of the new takeout places close to your new house and just enjoy a good meal, whether that’s pizza, Chinese, or something simple like chicken and chips.

When you’ve moved house, you also need to make a list of everyone that you need to notify.  It will be things like your work, if you haven’t moved jobs.  Your doctors and Dentist, all of your utility bills and any of the catalogs or credit cards will all need an updated address.

There are so many people you need to notify about another change of address and you may likely forget someone.  So one of the things that you can do is get your mail redirected to your new property. There is normally a cost for this, but it means that if you do get any post that is redirected you can make sure that that person gets added to your list.

You also will need to make sure that your new property is fully insured so if anything goes wrong you’re fully covered. You can get your insurance set up days in advance; it is great to be prepared beforehand and get it done before you move.

Just like moving house and updating all your banks and creditors, you must also update your ID. This is a bit more of a long-winded process, but you will need to make sure that your driving license or your passport has updated details as well. The same goes for details of your vehicle registration.

These are some ways to help moving house be a lot less stressful and a more enjoyable process. You and your family can move with ease, feeling prepared and secure. Enjoy your new home and make happy memories together.
