5 Useful Tips for Choosing a Veterinarian

October 20, 2023 by Pam Maynard

Pets need healthcare the same way people do. When you take care of an animal, you’re responsible for its well-being and safety, so you should choose a good veterinarian. Here are five useful tips for choosing a veterinarian.

1. Avoid Traveling Too Far

Not only is traveling long distances to the veterinarian likely to be inconvenient for you, but it can also be frightening and frustrating for your pet. If possible, you should look for a local veterinary office or animal hospital to take your pet to for routine healthcare.

For example, you might want to choose a veterinary hospital in Alexandria Kentucky if you live in Campbell County, Kentucky. Emergency services and specialty vet care may be more difficult to find locally, so choose the closest or most convenient option you can.

2. Ask for Recommendations

If you have friends or family who have pets, talk to them about their experience with vets. Ask them if they recommend any veterinary clinics or animal hospitals and why. If you have a purebred cat or dog, ask the breeder if he or she has recommendations.

You can also ask groomers, trainers, shelter managers and veterinary societies. Remember, it may be more difficult to find recommendations for certain pets. For example, rabbit owners need to take their pets to small animal or exotic vets, not general vets.

3. Discuss Costs and Fees

Healthcare is expensive, whether it’s for animals or humans. The biggest difference is health insurance for pets is far less common than it is for people. While regular, preventive healthcare for pets tends to be cheaper than it is for humans, specialty and emergency care may have big price tags.

Ask your vet about the likely costs and fees associated with your pet’s healthcare needs. Many vets understand how these costs can impact an owner’s finances, so they offer payment and financial assistance options.

4. Schedule a Consultation Before Committing

Be sure to schedule a consultation with your chosen vet before making a final commitment. Not only do you need to make sure you’re comfortable with the vet, but you also need to make sure your pet feels comfortable. Check whether the staff is friendly and knowledgeable. Make sure the facilities are clean and organized. Observe your pet’s behavior during and after the visit. You can also ask the vet any questions you have.

5. Review the Vet’s Experience and Accreditation

Above all, make sure the vet is reputable. You want to put your pet’s health in capable, trustworthy hands. Read reviews and research the experience of the vet and his or her staff. Check the staff’s credentials, including licenses, permits and educational background. Ask about what specialties staff members have. Make sure the clinic or hospital has an American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) accreditation.

To make sure your pet is healthy and happy, make sure you take it to the vet for regular checkups and get emergency or specialized care whenever you need to. Talk to your vet about your pet’s health and how to maintain or improve it at home.
