Things have changed so much since I was a kid. We used to learn by making mistakes. Today’s children have the benefit of having Thames and Kosmos STEM Kits. They are fun, hands-on kits that teach them valuable science lessons. I’m really excited to be able to share this company with you.
Who is Thames and Kosmos
Thames & Kosmos was founded in 2001 when a Rhode Island science museum director and her son partnered with a 200-year old German publishing house to help fulfill the great need for science education materials that were more stimulating, effective, relevant – and of course, fun!
For the past 22 years, we have dedicated ourselves to that mission, publishing and distributing toys and games that are both engaging and educational. We believe that authentic learning experiences combined with hands-on exploration are a powerful way to captivate curious young minds, and to keep them hungry for knowledge as they continue their journey into adulthood. Whether it’s building a robot, playing a board game, or performing a magic trick, we strive for our products empower kids to take risks, experiment, innovate, cooperate, problem-solve, and embrace the process of trial-and-error.
Candy Science Kits
What kid doesn’t like candy? Thames and Kosmos have developed a huge line of candy kits that also teach about a multitude of science subjects including properties of natural polymers, trial and error (cause and effect), and heat and temperature.
We tried out a couple of the candy kits from Thames and Kosmos. The Candy Gummy Lab and the Gumball Machine Maker. Both of these kits are made for children 6 years old and up. It is very important that an adult help the kiddos with these kits, especially the Gummy Candy Kit.
Each kit comes with everything you’ll need to share, experiment, and teach little ones with the science behind each activity. We really loved the Candy Gummy Kit. The kit included the candy mix, the mold, and candy bags (with labels) for the finished candies.
The Gumball Machine Maker was put together by my teenage son. He’s very mechanical but still needed to read the instructions very carefully. Because it was pretty advanced, I recommend that the adults read the instructions fully before they start the lesson. But when it’s all completed, it’s fun to try the different tricks and stunts. The kit even comes with a small number of gumboils to make sure the machine can be used immediately.
Spy Labs, Inc.
I have always liked spy games. Finding out who did it or sneaking around learning all the secrets has always been fun. Knowledge is power, right? Spy Labs, Inc. is a line of detective gear from Thames and Kosmos. We took a look at a few of the kits offered: Secret Message Tools, Cryptic Puzzle Safe, and Secret Codes and Ciphers.
Each one of these kits are super fun because these tools teach our kiddos to look for details, cause and effects, and problem solving skills. All of the Spy Lab kits are designed for children 8 years old and up.
Light-Up 3-D Puzzles
Say puzzle, and I’m there. Thames and Kosmos have developed a full line of fun origami-type puzzles that can be made, played with, and displayed. The lights that go in each of them are super bright, colored, and easily installed.
I was able to get and make Creatto 3-Pack Bundle: Elephant, Moose, and Kitty. These puzzles are way more difficult to put together than normal puzzles. Instructions are included with each puzzle and need to be read very carefully. Developed for children 6 years and older, however, they will need an adult’s help to put together. My other mom-friends had difficulty putting them together as well.
My Thoughts on Thames and Kosmos
Thames and Kosmos STEM kits are amazing. I loved every minute I spent reviewing these kits. Challenging as they were, knowing they are available for my grandchildren make me excited for the future. These kits would be great in classrooms, home-school classes, and even as Christmas gifts. Kiddos will have so much fun with them, they won’t even know they are learning.
