Diaper-changing is a frequent task in early parenthood. Mastering this skill keeps your baby happy, comfortable, and clean.
The more you practice changing diapers or learn how to wipe a baby girl or boy properly, the easier it becomes and the quicker you’ll get at it. However, you might feel like a fish out of water for the first few months of your baby’s life.
If you’re a little overwhelmed, you’re not alone. Many new parents have no idea where to start when changing a diaper and wiping their newborn. Below, we’ve covered the key steps for diapering and wiping so you don’t miss any essential aspects of the process.
Gather Essential Supplies
It’s always good to keep your cupboard well-stocked with diaper-changing equipment and supplies as the parent of a young baby. But what supplies do you need?
Here’s an extensive list of essentials to keep on hand so you’re always prepared for when your baby’s diaper needs changing:
- Diapers of the right size
- Baby wipes
- Diaper rash cream
- Changing mat
- Clean towels
Having everything within reach ensures you can keep one hand on your baby at all times during the process, keeping them safe and comfortable throughout.
Diaper-Changing Area
Make sure your diaper-changing area is clean and safe. Use a clean pad or changing table that is flat and comfortable for both you and your baby. It should be at the correct height to avoid putting excess strain on your lower back.
Ensure there are no hazardous objects in the area and never leave your baby unattended during the diaper-changing process when they are most vulnerable.
Remove the Soiled Diaper
Lay your baby gently on their back on the clean changing surface. Use one hand to lightly hold their feet to prevent them from kicking as you remove their soiled diaper.
To remove the diaper, open the tabs on each side and fold them back. Do so carefully to prevent urine or feces from leaking out of the sides and onto your floor. Carefully lift your baby’s legs with one hand and use your other hand to wipe away solid waste with the front portion of the diaper.
If you’re wiping a baby girl, always wipe from front to back to reduce the risk of potential infections, such as urinary tract infections (UTIs).
Proper Wiping
Using baby wipes or a clean, damp cloth, gently wipe your baby’s genital area and bottom (again, front to back if you’re wiping a girl). Grab a soft, clean towel and gently pat the area dry.
Consider applying diaper rash cream if there is any redness or bumpiness. Apply a thin layer of cream to reduce friction and protect the skin to prevent the rash from worsening and promote healing.
Put on a Clean Diaper
Open a clean diaper and slide it under your baby, ensuring the back part is aligned with their mid to lower back. Lift the front part of the diaper up between their legs so you can fasten the tabs on both sides.
Make sure the diaper fits snugly but not too tight. It should be secure enough to hold on waste without restricting your baby’s breathing or movement.
