What to Know About Heat Pumps Before Having One Installed

July 25, 2023 by Pam Maynard

Having a way to keep your home warm in the winter and cool in the summer is very important. When you are looking to improve your home, there are various options you have for doing this. One option you have is to have a heat pump installed. There is a lot that a property owner should know about getting heat pumps installed and keeping them in good condition moving forward.

What is a Heat Pump?

It is important to know how a heat pump works and is different from other options. A heat pump is a unique appliance that can be used to heat or cool your home. As opposed to creating heat or cold air, which is what an air conditioner or furnace will do, a heat pump works by extracting heat from outside air, water, or the ground and then transferring it into your home.

Benefits of Heat Pumps

There are various benefits that come with a heat pump that can make it a better option than other heating and cooling systems. Some of the benefits of having a heat pump installed include the following:

  1. Energy efficiency – As heat pumps are designed to transfer heat, rather than create it, they do not require as much electricity or other resources. This is better for the environment and can reduce energy bills.
  2. Dual functionality – Many types of pumps are able to both cool and heat the home out of the same appliance. This can reduce total costs of purchase, installation, and maintenance.
  3. Safety – The use of a heat pump can be safer than a furnace or other heating appliances. They do not have combustion risks such as unexpected fires or carbon monoxide poisoning.

Different Types of Heat Pumps

It is also important that you know what the different types of heat pumps are. For residential properties, there are four different options that most people will consider for their homes.

  1. Air-Source Heat Pumps are the most common type of heat pump for residential properties. During the colder winter months, they work by extracting any heat from the outside and transferring it into your home. During the hot summer months, it works to do the opposite.
  2. Geothermal Heat Pumps are unique as they try to extract heat from the ground during the winter months of the year. During the summer months, this process is turned off and they instead use a refrigerant system to keep the home cool.
  3. Water-Source Heat Pumps are similar to other forms of heat pumps because they extract naturally warm or cool air. However, a water-sourced heat pump will pull heat from local water sources. They also use refrigerants to cool a home in the summer.
  4. Ductless heat pump systems are standard heat pumps, but they tend to be wall units and use an outdoor system to extract heat. They are practical for smaller properties that do not have internal ducts.

Maintaining a Heat Pump

Similar to any other appliance in your home, a heat pump does require some maintenance and repair along the way. For most people, the basic types of maintenance that can be done regularly is to replace the filters every two to three months, keep the unit clean and free of debris, and check your thermostat settings regularly. It is also important to have it inspected and maintained at least once per year. This process can include cleaning coils, inspecting and fixing connections, and completing a more thorough cleaning process. Doing this regularly can keep the system running well and help you avoid more significant future repair needs.

When you are looking for a way to heat your home, there are various options to consider. One great option is to invest in a heat pump, which can be more efficient and safer than other heating and cooling systems. If you are going to purchase a heat pump for your home, there is much that you should know about purchasing and maintaining it.
